Whats the best way to get into the trade?
As it stands i am currently an IT Monkey in Yorkshire but getting a urge to get out of a small office and actually do things with my hands as i have a reasonably engineering focused mind. I also have a good foundation on how the common or garden washer/dryer/dishwasher/fridge work and go together so I thought I would look at White goods repair as a potential career

With the modern machines of today you will need to know far more than,

yea i was half asleep when i was posting that so ment to say i can get my hands dirty
I had thought about offering to work for a 2-3 days for nowt to with an existing appliance repairer to see if it is a job id want to take up before shelling out on training courses
So i guess my next question is anyone in the Leeds/Wakefield area want a teaboy for a couple of days 😀

I applaud your enthusiasm for the schoolboy work experience mindset. Though I fear your career choice is as poor as the current state of the trade.

In south Yorkshire, there’s the motor trade, plumbing, plastering and carpentry to name just four. All of which are in demand, can be entered upon without academic skills. All pay well and offer a long term career. Whereas the domestic appliance servicing trade is underpaid and over subscribed with a future as secure as Arthur Scargill’s dentures.

I think you’ll find it’s not that easy and that most trades are suffering at the moment.

tbh the IT trade is pretty much the same, oversubscribed
Ah well this thread has given me some things to think about but if anyone does want an unpaid teaboy for a couple of days im still up for seeing what the industry is like as a job
BTW – cheers for the schoolboy comment but that was sadly so a few years ago now:D
