Our (recirculating) cooker hood fan has packed up. It makes noise but there’s *no* suck. We’ve changed the charcoal and the filter but no joy, so we want to replace it. (It’s built into wall units that run the length of the kitchen).

We want one that extracts to the outside and the cooker is on an outside wall so in theory it’s a fairly simple coring job. But we have a 2nd floor flat so the external fixings can’t be done without a treble ladder, or maybe scaffolding. But next Summer there will be scaffolding up for roofing works, which presumably an installer could use.

My question is simply: could we buy a new hood now and get it installed in recirculation mode, then switch it to external ducting next year? Or is it impossible to change the mode once installed?

It’s worth checking the particular model but, in general, they are easel switched from one mode to the other as all it does is move a flap unless it was only intended for use in a single mode.

If you use a long core drill carefully, you maybe able to drill from the inside, presuming the wall is not rendered. Then let down a piece of rope through the hole and attach the outside part of the vent kit to it. Put some grip fill round the cover and pull it up the wall. Use your hand through the wall to pull it into its final position. I have used this method with success between houses built close together to be able to gain access.

    Hi

Just make sure you have a 5″ hole and NOT 4″ as most extractors use 5″ ducting now.
