ParticipantHi there,
I have a Hotpoint washer-dryer (a WDD960) that is around 18 months old. In the last month or so, I have noticed that the synthetics drying cycle gets a lot hotter than it used to. I’m sure that it used to get fairly warm but not hot. Now, when I open the door after a completed cycle (even when it’s only a 40 min cycle) the clothes are very hot to touch and the inside of the door is too hot to touch for more than half a second. The door even left a red mark on my toddler’s tummy when she brushed against it. Even on the wool cycle (which is apparently Woolmark approved for hand wash only items), the clothes inside and the door are just as hot when I’m sure it used to be barely warm at all. Initially an error code would come up after a cotton drying cycle (F:13) but this has not happened recently (since the first engineer came out, see below).
Could anybody confirm that this sounds too hot please? Or am I just going a bit crazy?
The machine is covered by a Hotpoint appliance protection policy and we’ve had three visits by engineers so far. The first unblocked a lot of fluff from the filter (or maybe condenser, I’m not sure sorry). The second man argued with me for over an hour saying that it was normal for it to get that hot but eventually ordered some parts. Today he returned to fit a ‘heater sensor IDC’ and a ‘module 3PH (3.5SW)’. However, the machine is still just as hot after a short synthetics cycle.
Thanks for any help you can give.

The cutout temperature is approx 115 deg Celsius. Changing the Thermistor (aka Heat Sensor IDC) and the control board (aka Module 3PH) takes care of the electronic control side of any potential problem. But I venture to suggest they take a even closer look at the ‘Condenser unit’ and the ‘Blower Fan’ especially in a case like this.
Question: Have they taken the dryer unit apart to check it I wonder?

Thanks for replying.
So it does sound too hot? The last engineer pretty much accused me of “trying to pull a fast one” (his words!) and said that dryers always get that hot on all cycles, so I’ve been doubting myself.
The first engineer did have a look inside but he was very quick to start emptying out fluff and didn’t do anything else after that. On the second visit the engineer didn’t even take the top off, he just ordered the parts he fitted at the third visit, but I don’t think he checked anything else. He said that the only possible problem could be with the parts he replaced.
I’m dreading having to call them out again as the last guy wasn’t very nice and I know we will be charged for the call out if they don’t agree that there is something wrong. Do you think it’s worth arguing it, or should I just fork out for an independent engineer do you think?
Thanks again.

Tough for me to answer Rachel but if, and I have no reason to doubt by the way, your toddlers tummy was burnt on the door. Then clearly the ‘cool down’ part of the drying cycle has failed big time! (I make the assumption all the while that you have not shortened the drying cycle at all and allowed it to complete the cycle automatically?)
If all of the above is in order I suggest you ask to speak with the Service Manager at Hotpoint voicing your concerns and observations regarding its service history.
I do not recommend independent intervention at this stage….

Thanks, I will do that. Yes, I allow the cycle to finish on its own – I do normally use a very short cycle (40 mins) just to start things off drying, but I don’t think that should make a difference should it?

No difference at all.

I am having the same problem. Had not used it for wool before. All came out far too hot and badly creased such that they are unwearable.. Binned new clothes. Now pulled out towels and got a blast of hot air in face. Need to quickly dry synthetics and am wondering if I have a washer dryer I cannot use. About 24 months old and deliberately bought for my retirement as no longer access to launderette for drying in winter

A few questions you state you are using synthetics drying, are you using the high or low heat option as its sounds as if your over drying ?
You say you are using timed dry for 40 minutes, its possible that that it still to long. When using the timed dry option rather than the automatic dry options the drier will dry for the full duration even if the load was dry half way through. Then as everything is dry there is nothing to absorb the heat and the drier will get hotter and hotter, this results in it being to hot for the cool down part to really make an impact and bring the door glass down to safe temperature to touch,if the machine has been running with a dry load that heat builds up, its not dangerous in the sense of fire but you can often find the door and front panels get very hot, as has been said its got a stat at 105 but glass that’s been heated to 80 degrees will take an hour or so to cool not the 10 minutes on the end of the cycle
Have you tried it on the automatic settings as this will sense the dryness of the load and stop when they are dry ?December 16, 2012 at 11:16 pm #365465tj5793

Have you had a read of the instructions about load size for drying they are very small compared to the wash loads just a thought?
If you still feel you have a problem request a technician visits instead of an engineer.December 17, 2012 at 5:41 pm #365466iadom

I do hope that you did not try and use the drying cycle with your woollens. 😥

Filter at rear of heater unit tends to block on these. Results in low flow past the heater. Usually throws an error due to over heating.
