ParticipantHi all, this forum has saved my washing machine and tumble dryer on several occassions just using the search function, but this time I’m out of luck.
I have a Hoover Nextra HNC170 condensor dryer and over the last year or so it’s been making some nasty electrical smells with the occassional cracking sound, but if you let it cool down it was fine. It did it again the other day and is now completely dead. I took the top cover off and noticed that the mains filter/suppressor was black and cracked and looked in a very sorry state. So I ordered a new one from the store section and fitted it, but all is still not well. That may have explained the smells and cracking sounds over the last year but now I think something else is wrong.
When I turn on the power the (good) red light comes on the front panel, but when I turn the dial to make the drum turn there is a flash and pop that comes from either the timer or the PCB next to it then the fuse in the plug blows (i saw the flash with lid off – I am careful BTW ;)). With the help of this forum I replaced the PCB about two years agobut that’s all I’ve had to do.
Anyone have any ideas or is it time for the big white goods shop in the sky? It’s about 7 years old so it’s had a reasonable run, but I’m hoping it’s got some more life in it.

Flash! Pop! and 7 years out of it, then I think there’s only one answer, time to replace it for sure.
You could ask yourself if you wired the mains filter correctly? If you didn’t then chances are that that has either blown the timer, the module or more likely, both.
These dryers are rubbish in the extreme and 7 years something of a record well worth telling Hoover about. Perhaps they can then give you a creditable discount toward a suitable replacement? Better still, don’t buy Hoover again is my advice. 😀

Thanks Martin, I suspected that would be the answer. The mains filter looks pretty idiot proof, but I have my moments 😉
Any recommendations for a replacement? It has to be a condensor and price isn’t as important as the thing working and not giving me grief!

Zanussi are usually a good buy right now.

Thanks Martin. I went for the base ZDC37200W model as the bigger/more expensive ones didn’t seem to bring much else to the party. £199 from JohnLewis.com with 2 year warranty. Thanks a lot for your help.
