Interesting item,came over well.
Surprised by the comment after Kens input from a presenter stating that an appliance 12 years old plus wasn’t worth repairing implying just bin it as the savings made on a new appliance were better than having an old one repaired.
Could be just a minor repair,might go another few years.January 5, 2012 at 11:44 pm #366617Applianceman2010

Yet another nationwide broadcast indoctrinating the masses toward the throw away society. “Not worth fixing, can’t be fixed, uneconomical to fix, new machines more economic….blah blah bl**dy blah…”
If those in the trade are saying it then it MUST be true. 😯
Time now I think for someone to stand up and accuse the manufacturers of wrong doing and to refrain from blaming consumers all the while!

I see my previous post has set the proverbial cat amongst….. :rolls:
Or has it? Maybe the thread has just fallen asleep?
Well in the absence of comment I would still like to add that if I where fortunate enough to be asked by the media to comment on such a topic then I would hold no punches on the state of the trade. Not namby pamby about cheap imports, user abuse, short life cycle expectancy, whinge… whinge…
Instead I’d tell them straight, the failings of the industry, the con on energy saving, the blatant use of non recyclable carcinogenic manufacturing components, the abject usage of ‘re-branding’ former ‘respectable’ company names such as Kenwood, Morphy Richards, Russell Hobbs etc, stuck on crappy cheap Chinese imports. The blatantly unfair restrictive practice by manufacturers of withholding technical information and documentation. Insurance companies and national service providers in cahoots with manufacturers. The customer phone-line cons putting calls directly to insurance agencies……and on…and on….
Next time the BBC rings….hand the mic to me will you, I’ll tell them the truth….. 👿

Only just! By the time I read this it was yesterday’s.
Easy way to find it, use Ken’s link, click on Schedule in menu along top then use calendar on schedule page to select Thursday 5th January and scroll down to 12 noon programme and clik on “listen again”. Should work for another 6 days.

Thing about that is Martin, as appealing as the idea may be and, as much as you may not like a “softer” approach…
I don’t particularly wanted sued to death. It’s not a thing that’s right up there on my “to do” list.
Going on national radio or TV and spouting off about how deplorable the manufacturers are is wrong in some ways and asking for a fight. You’re just painting the target on your own back.
It’s not too wise.
There was the comment there about restrictions on technical information.
But all that aside, I was interviewed for that 30 second clip or whatever it was for about an hour. A lot more was said, much on the subjects about what you touch on but, without editorial control (which is highly unlikely to ever happen) you cannot choose which bits are published or used in the media.
So you can bump your gums till the cows come home spouting the truth as you may see it, say whatever you want, but it’d still get edited down and most of what you spoke about (or ranted about in your case) will never see the light of day.
Better idea is perhaps to come across as subject aware and knowledgable, reasonable, moderate and calm so that at least some of the message you want out gets you, wouldn’t you think?

OK, using that broadcast as the example then, you told the listener nothing more than what they already knew or had suspected. Aside from that the emphasis, by the programmes presenter, of the term “BER”. Further proof, if proof were needed, of indoctrinating the masses toward an ever growing mindset of today’s throw away society.
You know as well as I that manufacturers are at the forefront of creating this situation. All too aware of the corruptive practices they have adopted in recent years. How foreign manufacturers have bought up good, long established UK companies, closed our factories and taken the brand names with them. 10,000’s of job losses the result. Along with all that they have taken for themselves. All the technical know how that prevents those outside of their companies the ability to service and repair their products.
There’s no fear of being “sued to death” for telling the truth. What perfect a platform can there be but to be able to go on national radio and tell the truth. Tell them something they didn’t know and inspire others into looking more closely into what’s going on all around them.
Sabre rattling is not what you do I realise that. You stand to lose out if you were seen to be against the whole damn circus of today’s industry. After all it would appear that you are doing quite nicely from it so why should you?
Mindful of that you chose to be introduced as representing the Whitegoods Trade Association, smart move. Why then did you not ‘don your other hat’ and tell them the way it is as the WTA would have wished it to be?
Sadly the opportunity was lost on this occasion but can I please suggest that if the national media come knocking on your door at any time in the future for comments on all thing white goods, do let me know. I know just the right person who can rattle a few sabres.

Ehm, excuse me Martin but you’ve jumped to a number of conclusions there, publicly aired them and they are absolutely incorrect.
You have also cast aspersion on my motivations and character.
To be honest I’m actually rather offended by some of the inferences you make.
You have no knowledge whatsoever of the content of about an hour’s worth of interview. You did not hear the questions that were being asked. You therefore have no place whatsoever in accusing me of saying things or not saying things based on what amounts to a soundbite.
To be completely blunt, wind your neck in as you’re being a buffoon.
As for the accusation that I somehow stand to lose by upsetting people, have you actually paid attention to what you have read these forums? And I’d love for you to explain to me exactly how and what I’d lose.
As to what hat was worn, the BBC chose to use the WTA monicker, not me.
But you’ve chosen to completely ignore the fact that I had no control over the content, the BBC did, yet you still attempt to pair me as being the person that did edit and control the content of the program.
Write to You And Yours at the BBC if you’re so smart and tell them what was wrong in your wise and wonderful opinion, see how much they care about your comments.
It is clear you appear to have no idea how working with the media works. Letting you near a media outlet in any way would be the kiss of death to any move to further any plight as you’d be taken about as seriously as a circus clown with diatribe like this.
If you want to level accusations at least make sure your facts are straight as, here they are not.
And that is exactly what leads to being sued for libel.
Now can you please stop being a muppet as I know you’re a bit brighter than this.
