Fault with this one is that it has got a straight short to earth. Now, I’m far from an expert on these appliances, in fact this is the first one I’ve really touched in anger. I was there to fix the washing machine and asked to have a look at it. Two hours later and still bamboozled.
Checked: compressor, condenser fan, defrost heater, evaportator fan, thermostat, ice maker/water dispenser – all good.
Is there anything else I should check? Please help me to end this nightmare.
    Cheers,
    Dave

the most common cause of earth leakage on this fridge is the defrost heater followed by compressor.
i don’t want to sound patronising here, but are you certain that these two things are ok?
other than that and if all the other components are good, then you could have a wiring fault. it depends how long you want to spend on the thing really, checking all the wires etc.

    cheers.

Please, sound as patronising as you like! As I said, I aint no expert. However, I’m pretty sure they’re both ok. Disconnected them in turn and tested them directly – both ok. Earth leakage still exists when they are disconnected as well. As far as I can tell, the fault lies somewhere between where the wiring goes up into the bowels near the compressor, to where it enters the fridge cabinet at the controls. So, possible wiring, but how the hell do you access it?

    Thanks for the reply,,

sounds like you’ve got a tricky one there dave, but it also sounds like you’ve covered most things.
the wiring isn’t accessible though. it could just be a case of cutting them until you get a good reading and then running another wire in its place.
there is a wiring diagram taped to the underside of the fridge section on many maytags, not sure if this model is one of them.
good luck mate, sorry i cant be any more use to you.

    cheers.

Quick update on this one. Turned out to be the heater within the ice-maker. Didn’t even know it had one! Left it disconnected and the fridge all works a treat. Having the wiring diagram does help though. Found it tucked away inside the controls box. I must say though, having shyed away from these before, that there is not a lot to them really, and that they come apart remarkably easy. All you need is a 1/4″ socket!

    Cheers,

    Dave
