I have been an engineer for 10 years now, then they brought in the gas safe policy, and that stated that any one that works on a fridge needs to be gas safe qualified, so I thought this is my time to learn how to regas a fridge, but they only got to aircons and stuff,so yes I am qualified( On Paper ) to regas a fridge but have got no idea how to do it. I live in London and would like some one to show me, cause when it comes to fridges if its not someting simple, i have to get some one else in to do it. I dont mind to pay for a course or what ever but need to learn.

    Thanks for any help.

Gas safe to work on a fridge? I think someone is pulling your leg.

    Re: Gas Safe!

If you did complete your f-gas succesfully the practical involves,re-claiming refrigerant from a system, pulling a vacuum and then charging the system with the corrrect amount, loging weights recaimed and charged etc.
If you passed that you will know how to “gas a system” and have a certificate and card to proove your competence to customers etc.
You will also have a refcom number like REF1004284.
Perhaps you are talking about LPG powered fridges, different animal where you do need a gas-safe qualification.
    Leg pull 😕

    Re: Gas Safe!

First off you dont need to have any qualification to work on R600a systems and that includes system work. Secondly, if you have time, come to the February meeting and look me or any of the other WTA guys up. There will be something to interest you.

    I’m confused.

Maybe you need to return here and clarify what you are talking about or what you don’t understand.

    Re: Gas Safe!

Sorry for the confusion, I have done the City and Guilds Level 2 F-Gas and ODS, Regulation Category 1 500/5730/3, I can do ,re-claiming refrigerant from a system, pulling a vacuum and then charging the system with the corrrect amount, loging weights reclaim and charge, as far as I understood any one that works on a fridge needs to be f-gas certifide since June 2011, the problem I have got is that on a fridge it hasn’t got a charging valve and fridge refrigerant is explosive, so how do you charge it or reclaim it

    Re: Gas Safe!

    Hi,
    You use either thisor this.
Depends on how you approach checking the charge, pressure or performance by a line tap valve,we all work a bit differently.
R600a doesn’t require being recovered it can be gassed off to atmosphere as long as it’s can be vented outside, have in the past connected a bunsen burner when I couldn’t safely release it although that crteates C02 but made a couple of jobs less of a worrry.
Fosters among others are using it in commercial cabinets now so significant amounts in them, not sure if I have seen one somewhere but presume there will be a vacuum pump to extract but it would have to be intrinsically safe.
You don’t legally need one at present,so at least no heavy exspense there.

    Gas Safe!

    Hi

Working on R600a refrigerants is NOT controlled by either F gas or gas safe.

You do NOT recover R600a in any way what so ever !!!. If you attempt to it is extremely dangerous.

You use piercing pliers with a long vent hose and vent to the outside.

Of course pm me,don’t do much r600a domestic wise, mostly light commercial refigerataiion and a/c,plus a few general domestic appliances.
I thought I had seen something about a recovery pump for r600a which is here Javac in Australia.
It turns out to be a manual pump much like a stirrup pump by the look of things, would be more of hinderence than help I should think.
Would think the cost of a mechanicaly powered pump if it was developed which would have to be intrinsically (explosion proof) safe would be thousands.
Chaps on here like r600a are more often involved with this refrigerant than me.

    Re: Gas Safe!

Most systems carry less than 50g of R600, no need to panic the emergency services when doin a regass.

Simply break the stub, loc ring a schrader valve onto fill pipe and of you go, you’ll no if no gas in system when you either fitted a line tap to diagnose pressure or went gun-how breaking stubby
