An engineers lot is less than a happy one at the best of times. What seems (on paper and in the day’s diary) like a straighforward call turns into a raging health hazard for more than one reason or another.

    For example:

Two calls this week stand out in my book as a flippin’ health liability for anyone to undertake.

Call 1) Washing machine and tumble dryer in a cellar. The only lightbulb is one of those energy saving jobs. (Dimmer than a TOC H lamp as we old ‘uns refer as being)The machines are stood on what could be described at best as a shelf, at worst rotten wallpaper pasting table….

The machines about 3 feet off the ground to allow the washer to drain out into a ground level pipe that runs into the flowerbed outside. Both machines faulty, both needed getting on the ground to fix. No-one to assist in this delicate task therefore I never attempted to go further and walked away.

Call 2) Another washing machine, on paper a simple blocked pump issue. In reality it was in the downstairs bog, drain hose poked into the WC because the waste pipe behind the machine blocked up years ago and the wall needed taking down in order to access the coupling to the stink pipe.

Not enough space to rotate the machine or tip it backwards to get underneath. In order the machine could be installed there meant the WC had to be removed first. They figured that as the machine was new and had a 5 year warranty it would be no problem to remove the loo to fit it in and god help anyone if in later years in had to be fixed.

Enter Martin into a room smaller than a Fiat 500’s boot, spotted the yellow urine drips around the edge of the bog and the delightful smell of regular useage. I made the obvious and immediate decision…………. :rolls: 👿

Last week I went to the worst smelling property I have ever been to.
I should have walked away as soon as the stench hit me.(Health & Safety issues.) This was as soon as the front door was opened.
I soon realised the smell was the customer covered in poo, to put it politely. He thankfully left me to it as I fumbled to open the kitchen window which typically had an allen key lock on it.
I spotted his mattress on one occasion which was in a worse state than his pants. This Im sure wasnt a one of accident but an on going problem.
I don’t know how I ate my tea that day.
All for £41. Why didn’t I get a job in a bank when I left school?

This week a range cooker report of Tripping the electric after 10 minutes, recall from a WP contractor.

Appliance had 2, 3 core mains cables coming from the appliance terminal block, one went to the spur outlet, the other (appears to have been disconnected from a supply at some point, as the 3 bear wires had signs of being wired and held with cable clamp)cable was placed through a hole in the cookers rear wall resting near the cooling fan.

As soon as the cooling fan kicked in it would cause the cable to touch the body of the appliance and trip.

Engineer ( I use the term loosely) didn’t spot it, how he didn’t was clarified by the client who confirmed it he was only there a few minutes and told the client her 3 yr old fuse box was the wrong type for her home !!!!!!!

That’s a first and goes into the top 10 of a long list of dangerous appliances missed by our industries so called professionals.

The one advantage is that as Indies we always have the choice to walk away unlike being a Manufacturers Employee where the appliances are under Guarantee and have to be fixed !

I will not work it Sh** holes like this, have done it in the past but do not need to be doing now.
