    hi there,

new to this site. just wanted to ask a few questions about problems i’v been having with two of my kitchen appliances.

the first concerns my Phillips fridge/freezer which has been built into my kitchen cabinents. not sure how old it is since it was there when i bought my house, or what model as i cant find any model names. but the problem is that water is found at the bottom of the fridge every now and again, about once a week. it used to be less often. in the past, turning up the dial to make it could seemed to prolong this. i do notice that it seems to have the habit of completing switching itself off and not producing any ice on the top place (the thing that makes its cold). i read the FAQ about fridges, but i’m not sure if this is the problem. it doesnt leak constantly, but just dumps a whole load of water at the bottom. today, water starting leaking outside into the floor… is it worth fixing and how easy would this be? or is it on its last legs?

i ordered what i think is a famous book on how to fix fridges from the States (“Refrigerator Repair (Cheap and Easy)”). its still being sent to me, but i thought i’d do some more research while i was waiting for it.

my second problem is with my Zanussi washing machine (Aquacycle 1000, FLA 1002W), which is no more than 2 years old max. but is leaking from the door, just where the door shuts with its surround. i have a look, but nothing seems to be out of order. the rubber seal is not a very good design, from what i can see, but at the same time, it doesnt look as if its knackered. so before getting another rubber seal, would like to trouble shoot it.

sorry for the long message, but i might as well give u the full details on one post rather than over several…

any suggestions would be gratefully received.
    thanx,
    Long.

    Long,

The model number of your fridge/freezer can usually be found on a label in the vacinity of the salad drawer 😉 Possibly the drain channel from the evaporator (assuming the fridge is a ‘larder type’? is blocked and may need cleaning. (Careful though dont use sharp metal objects here 🙁 )

Your washing machine, likely that the leak is coming from the dispenser and not the door seal (assuming the door glass is clean and clear of any limescale ridges on the glass) If the knife-edge rubber door seal is clean and true it should be OK.

Take out the dispenser drawer and give it a good clean and clean out the dispenser cavity around the inlet nozzles as they could be blocked 🙂

    Hope that helps?

    Martin,

    cheers for ur replies.

a couple of terms i dont understand here…

Fridge: it is a larder type, the fridge and freezer sections are separate. the drain channel is the little groove on the back wall of the fridge that contains any excess water that flows from the big metal plate (whats that called? the evaporator?).
i’v looked at that many times, doesnt seem to be have anything wrong with it. that is why i suspected that there is something wrong with the timer.

Washing machine: what is the dispenser? i dont have my manual to hand so not sure what this is or if it is explained in the manual. the machine is pretty new and there are no signs of wear and tear or limescale damage. so will have a poke around to find the dispenser, if it is easily recognisable.

    cheers,
    Long.

    Long,

The drain channel may well be blocked and overflowing. It should have a drain hole in the centre or end of that channel attached to a hose leading through the back and onto the compressor. 🙂

Unless you live in Australia (maybe 😕 ) the Dispenser is otherwise called a ‘Soap Drawer’ (Some Aussie machines aren’t fitted with them at all) and that soap drawer could be blocked and splashing over and down towards the porthole door (making you think the door is leaking)…Just a thought 😛

ok, will take a look at the washing machine when its doing its thing. i’m not sure where the water is coming from as i never sit there and watching it spinning.

anyone got any other comments? Penguin? anyone?

    cheers,
    Long.

ok, i cleaned out the dispenser as u have suggested. now just waiting for the next washing load to see if this is the problem. it was pretty clogged up. and there were water scale marks near the dispenser… sounds like a simple fix if this really is the problem!

    thanx for the advice.

    Long.
