    Hi,

I have a Siemens oven (6 yrs old)
    Typ: HBT492L
    E-Nr: HB34551GB
    240V
    50Hz
    2.8KW

In recent storms, a lightning strike tripped lots of things except the kitchen. For some reason the fuses didn’t blow, and the oven lost it’s time and the element won’t heat up.

The time registers 0:00, when I set the mode (grill, oven, fan assist, etc) the red mode lamp switches on, but when I then set the temperature, the red temp lamp refuses to budge, the internal light refuses to light up and the oven doesn’t get hot.

If I set a mode and a temperature, then switch the oven off at the wall then I hear a relay click. When I switch it back on at the wall I get around a second of life; all the lamps come on, I can hear a relay click again, and it dies.

The matching hob also has an annoying habit of not switching the igniters off when the gas is lit. I have to fiddle with the other hobs to get it to stop sparking.

    Anyone got any ideas?

It does sound as though the lightning strike has zapped the Auto Timer Unit (bit expensive at around £130 plus 🙁 ) Does the “Auto” light show ’cause if it does you will first need to set the clock unit to “Manual” then see if it heats up ❓

Not sure about the hob ignitor, sorry 🙁

I’d agree with Martin, unless the timer is set to “auto” then it’s most likely zapped, the only good news is that that’s liable to be the only really sensitive electronic part that would take any damage.

The hob, if it’s got auto-ignition, is liable just to be the switch or switches on the gas taps that are faulty which probably had little to do with the lightning strike. Sounds as if they are failing to release and leaving the ignition unit energised. They do fail on most brands, but I’m not familiar with that particular appliance so I don’t know the exact setup.

    Thanks Martin.

The clock blinks between 0:00 and Auto (vertically on the right), well it did until I worked out how to reset the clock and switch it off auto. Murphy’s Law dicates that the oven is the only appliance I don’t have the operating instructions for.

Now the oven heats up and I can tell the time. Glorious stuff.

    Many thanks again,

    Simon

    Thanks kwatt,

The hobb has four burners with rotary switches on the right in a column. One of the knobs is partially melted, which that backs up your idea that it’s nothing to do with the Lightning.

In fact on further investigation, the burnt knob pulls off and is sat on a grommet. Under this grommet is a switch which sticks for some reason and seems to be what turns the ignitor on and off.

Thanks for your help – I think it just needs a clean.

    Simon
