bit reluctant to start a topic , but i think its worth exploring

no-one has mentioned their presence or talk.

does anyone know their agenda , are they recruiting engineers as per little snippet thrown in at end of speech re potential starting salary 34-38k. ( would like to see the breakdown on this sum).. was wta the correct place to recruit engineers ? .

are they really looking for partners – or are they looking for in roads to valued technical that they cant get.

im all for networking/partnering and generally helping the cause of the independent but i think we need more than a speech about how many millions centrica has.

The feedback we receive from the conferences is how interesting the presentations are from the front ,to that end we try to make them as varied as possible, and we also ask what the content would be ,its fair to say that Gordons comment at the end caught everyone by surprise ,however to offset that ,during subsequent conversations they had there eyes opened greatly with regards to the professionalism of the independent repairers.
They want to work with the WTA with regards to ways in which they can help us.

I admit that I do have some reservations of British Gas, also was surprised to see them at the conference. A big company trying to maintain a local business ethos does not quite cut the mustard. They employ hundreds of engineers, I dispute the figures on how many they have on their book. They have millions of customers who took out a cover and they have a few hundreds engineers? I would have thought thousands rather few hundreds.

I do know of one British gas engineer, he complains of long hours and poor pay considering he spent a great deal of travelling and being away from home for most of the day. He hardly get to see his wife and kids.

I am wary of joining them as partners, I think I will wait until I see the papers and make judgement there.

The true agenda will come out in due course for sure. I dont understand a company the size of BG having a problem recruiting/training service engineers that they need use the wta meeting to achieve it. Part of the speech it was said that it wasnt necessarily about the technical abilities of who they are looking for but more about personality/dealing with customers etc (yes that does form a part) as they can train anyone (my words cant remeber the exact phrase used) to do that. This makes it even more bizare when there are 3million people unemployed and as we know comet laying off alot of people more than capable and employable. Sumit isnt right here imo.

its hard not to be a tad cynical ,
i understand the speech re recruiting as their are many one man bands who may think the wage of £34-38 k appealing. i would want proof of that wages if i was thinking about it.

i suppose we should treat brit gas like many other w/p out there. ?

i have strong feeling that technical has a lot to do with this ..

maybe we can get a statement from brit – gas on how the partnership would work

34 – 38k afaik is for the Gas appliance engineers,(must have boiler experience)

Their white goods (electrical only) are earning somewhere in the mid 20k range

i work for british gas, i can verify i have NEVER earned anywhere CLOSE to 34k.
basic is 24k…you get bonuses….but not 10k worth.
when i left hoover 8 years ago, BG had 500 white goods engineers. not sure how many we got now, close to 700 i would have thought, but that is a guess

K.yeah i asked today and 400 sounds about right.
only said around 700 cos when i joined, there was probably 25 engineers covering kent and sussex. now theres about double that number so (wrongly) assumed other areas had recruited as the south east had
