ParticipantMotor/Chemical Smell and Noise After Clearing Excess Freezer ICE Buildup
😕
I am living abroad in Prague, and in my flat I did a routine clearing out of the built up frost/ICE masses in the freezer.
Immediately, almost during the process, I noticed a foul smell, chemical in nature as that of motor oil or a burned out motor something of the sort.
At the same time a whirling/purring noise started up, and it seems like there is an incremental sound of some leak, like a spurt, spray as if it would be gaseous leak above the freezer area…?
Should I be worried about this or will the thing sort itself out?
I imagine th thing was struggling to keep up the temp during the cleaning out process and maybe this is just the result of it ovrworking itself. However, if for some reason the “ICE Mass” removal unblocked or cracked something maybe this is a critical situation????

Hi
How did you defrost? Using a knife ect ? If so you’ve probably be a punctured evaperator. Which deems it scrap

Hi, Thanks for the reply Bryan,
I didn’t really “defrost”, it was more or less just an Ice Chipping frenzy. I did use a knife as well.
After reading your reply I re-assessed the situation, still reaks of something like burning motor oil or a burned out electric motor. I also checked the shelf I had cleared out, and I now see that it isn’t a shelf but it appears to have some raised surface with what looks like to hold cooling coils or something.
😡 I see small scrapes and few small apparent punctures in one area now.The noise has ceased, but I am now thinking that is only a sign of the worsened situation.
IT is a Zanussi ZI918/12KA 55cm Integrated 50/50 Fridge Freezer, and I can’t find any documentation to tell me if there is something replaceable at all.
An anyone advise?…Is this smell something harmful to my health?

Hi
Not really harmful unless you was inhaling for long periods and lots of it.
The unit is scrap though, so it’s down to the shops to buy a new one.Bryan
