ParticipantHi Guys. I’m sure a lot of you are more computer savvy than me but thought i’d share this info. Mine was running slow, done all the usual stuff, defrag, remove unwanted programmes, run a good quality cleaning programme etc.( I use c cleaner ).
I was then told that although the 1GB of RAM memory I had was fine 5 years ago to run programmes, new programmes, such as the latest internet explorer ( although I use Firefox )eat up memory space.
Was introduced to http://www.crucial.com
These guys scan your computer, tell you how much you can add to your system, then supply for a very reasonable price and explain how to fit.
Mine is now running 2GB and is running much better. It cost around £25.00
They recommend you you change the boards as a pair i.e 1GB each. Dont know why, it may be the way data is transfered.
Hope this helps some of you who want to get another 12 months out of an old computer. 😀March 15, 2012 at 5:34 pm #371160Martin

Sounds like your computer is literally ‘running on the edge’. Adding RAM memory is the way forward but unless the processor can handle what you want from your machine the inevitable will soon become apparent…………….You need a new PC..!!
What you have basically done is put ‘go faster stripes’ on a Nissan Micra. You can get better wheels that run faster without breaking the bank and sticking more RAM in won’t really solve the problem…it’ll bite you up the bum soon enough.
If you want a REAL PC that can take you into orbit then check out MY WHEELS 😀

Treat your self to a Mac next time Martin- I did a year ago and have not looked back.
No viruses, no slow running, no hassle- just a super fast computer.

Clive.Completely agree here. I dumped windoze a few years ago for my main computer, and after using iMac will never go back.

+ 1 here for Mac, I have a I Mac I use for hobbies and a Mac Book Pro, Having run Windows for years, built a lot of Windows machines and then building some Hackintosh machines, I then got into Mac a few years back, for a lot of reasons its the way to go and once you get your head around the OSX OS you wont be going back to windows I would bet.

No viruses,
This statement is not strictly true though. 😉March 16, 2012 at 11:20 am #371168kwatt

No, it isn’t.
However, by comparison… 😉

As the learned amongst us will know any Operating System can be infected with Malware and OSX is no different, but OSX has its own Virus System built in and the user is always prompted to verify any installation although it is not foolproof.
The majority of virus infections are targeted towards the Windows OS and the Registery provides a nice hiding hole in which to embed themselves, OSX and Linux are far less likely to become infected but Apple have had infections ever since the old Apple LC models so its not bulletproof .March 16, 2012 at 11:51 am #371170Martin

I’m always open to suggestions though having used Mac/snow Leopard and such I can’t ever imagine a Mac PC holding a candle to my set-up. Mac is good for video editing though it struggles with full HD streaming. Where my PC scores way way above any MAC is running Flight Simulation Software (M/Soft FSX)…..2 linked (HDMI) 26″ screens at the controls of a Boeing 777…….boy does it fly…!!
Now I can see this thread could turn into yet another Apple Mac v’s PC much like its sister thread the Android v’s Apple slanging match…..BRING IT ON..!! 😈

In some ways you are correct Martin.
A PC is especially better suited if you game. I fact, if you game seriously at all them the Mac isn’t really an option for most people IMO.
If you don’t and you just want a PC that “just works” and is easy to use then I’d always say Mac over PC. But, like most things it’s horses for courses and Macs are more expensive.
But the tight integration of software with hardware makes the Mac much more robust in general and I find the software much more intuitive to use.
I would point out though that as a long time Windows user from 3.11 through to XP I did struggle for a bit when I switched allegiance to the Mac.
Now I can’t get my head round the later versions of Doze that appear to try to emulate OS X in many ways, badly.
