ParticipantHi,
First post though can I say this site is a great resource. I got a replacement oven element from UKWhiteGoods last year which saved me £££s and the information on the site was both comprehensive and reassuring!
Here’s my problem. I have a Hotpoint Ultima WT741 which is nearing the last month of a 5 year warranty. Around a year or more ago the machine gave off an electrical burning smell but it happened just once and the machine continued to function well. However, since then, there have been audible sparking sounds when the machine runs. On the wash cycles there is a spark with each revolution, it’s less obvious during spins.
I’m guessing this is a brush/commutator issue but thought it may just be a loose wire and I’m aware that sparking is common when a commutator is bedding in. However should it be happening after 5 years? I didn’t want to remove the cover (as this would presumably void my warranty?) so I called the warranty providers and they told me if the engineer came out and they found nothing wrong I’d be charged £50. So I reasoned that I would wait and see if the machine broke down within the warranty, which it hasn’t. So my options are:
* Keep using the machine, let the warranty lapse.
* Call in the warranty and risk paying out £50.
* Attempt to diagnose and fix myself, presumably voiding my warranty. What should I do? Thanks in advance for any advice.

Can you give is the full model number and any serial number etc. Some of these machines do not have any brushes, they use 3 phase motors.
If I had any electrical device that was making unusual noises I would not use it again until it had been checked out.
What is £50 or even £100 if it sets on fire and burns your house down?
Get it looked at ASAP.

if yours says ont he front super silent it is a 3 phase motor so not brushes
if it does not say this then its likely a brushed motor and the brushes have worn
brushes are easy to check and replace and not expensive
it wont be a wire
as stated beforee electric appliance making sparking noises then stop using it till it has been repairedMarch 22, 2012 at 10:06 pm #371472bifter

Guys, thanks for your replies. The model is WT741P – it’s certainly nowhere near silent! Nor is there a ‘super silent’ logo.
I called in the warranty today so a Hotpoint engineer will be calling to arrange a visit apparently. Appreciate your advice!

An update on this (been on hols hence delay). The Hotpoint engineer came but dealt with my wife as I was at work. Anyway he said the brushes were fine. However the mains cable was a bit melted apparently so he swapped out this and the motor. The machine is running fine, however it is sparking quite a lot. Again, this should be normal with a new motor right?

No, it should not be sparking a lot.

Not good I guess but it’s a brand new motor, surely it must be that that’s making the noise just like the previous one (a slight crackle with each turn of the drum). Sounds like it’s located in the left side of the machine as I look at it?

Noise is subjective and as I cannot hear it I am unable to determine just how bad it is, however after doing three or four washes a new motor should not really ‘crackle’ and it certainly shouldn’t be sparking noticably.
