    Hi. I hope that someone can give me some advice, please.

    We bought this fridge-freezer a week ago. It seems to work fine, but it occasionally makes a fairly loud whining noise, similar to the squeal you get by releasing air slowly out of a balloon. The pitch of the noise slowly rises and falls and it seems to continue as long as the motor is on, after which it continues for a few seconds, then dies away with a few bubbles.

    This doesn’t happen every time the motor/fan comes on, but I’d say that we are hearing it to some extent every day. (The rest of the time, we just hear the standard quiet hum.) I’m guessing that it must be something to do with the circulation of the refrigerant gases, but my question is whether this is normal? The manual mentions that “slight bubbling noises” are normal, but I wouldn’t describe this noise in those terms and my old fridge-freezer never sounded like this. (The new one is frost-free – I don’t know whether that makes a difference?)

    Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

    Without hearing it it’s difficult but it sounds from what you describe as air is being sucked in through a small gap somewhere as the air pressure drops inside the fridge as it cools.

    Frost-free units are noisier than normal fridge/freezers as they have additional fans inside to circulate the air.

    If you’re unsure or unhappy with the noise level, it may be worth phoning Hoover customer care as they may send an engineer to check it for you.

    From what you say, it sounds as though the noise I’m hearing isn’t normal, so I’ll try giving Hoover’s service company another call. (I did actually try to give them a call before my first post, but I got fed up of waiting on hold and then found this site.)

    Hi – also having the same noise (as far as I can tell from Dominic’s description) from my Hoover HFA290 fridge freezer. The appliance is only a couple of weeks old. However, whenever the repair guy comes round, it refuses to make the noise (this is driving me crazy, cos I’m having to take time off work to be at home when the repair guy arrives). Can anyone, or Dominic, let me know what the problem is and how it was fixed ?
