ParticipantHi,
Can some kind engineer/expert please advise? My 12-year old Zanussi WJS1397W washer/dryer has two issues, I’m not sure if they are related:
1) There’s a greyish soapy residue that I’m now finding in the fluff filter. The residue stinks. I’ve run the machine with Dr Beckmann cleaners and with bio powder (hot empty wash) and am cleaning the filter after every wash, but a small bit of stinking residue still appears. What should I do? (Yes, I mainly use liquid washing detergent, I’ve just bought some non-bio powder to use instead)
2) The machine appears to be leaking from the front fluff filter screw opening. I’ve tried screwing it really tight and have tried replaced the rubber seal, but during a wash the filter screw seems to slightly ‘undo’. Is there some huge build-up of pressure causing it to undo? Or is it just age? Or something else?
Thanks very much in advance for useful replies.

I’d imagine theres some residue in the screw that it should tighten into, normally its just a little piece of fluff or sandy grit that causes the filter seal to leak, you could try taking out the filter & reversing the rubber seal incase its worn on one side or order a new one. Now for the smell, theres a manifold on the dryer of the machine than runs down the inside on same side as pump filter, these tend to get blocked up with wet fluff & dirt gunge, if you can’t clean it, you may have to replace it.

Hi Seamy,
Thank you very much for kindly replying.
I believe I’ve already given the screw a good clean but will double check.
With regards to the manifold, I haven’t the foggiest, it looks like the machine will have be taken to to bits – I was hoping to avoid that but will see if I can do so.
If anyone else has any other ideas/advice once again I’d be very grateful (with no disrespect intended to Seamy).
Thanks again

If you have already put it through a 90 deg wash with cleaner/ descaler, the residue could be loosened lime scale. Try another 90deg wash with lime scale remover and see if that helps.
You should be doing that once a month.
Am afraid you will still have the build up that my college mentioned, so would be well worth having that cleaned out also.

Hi Steve,
Thank you very much for your kind advice. I used the Dr Beckmann at 60 degrees (as it said on the packet side) – I guess I should have opted for 95 degrees instead. I will indeed buy more and run it yet again, this time at 95.
The screw at the front filter seemed to be ok in terms of gunk, but I did a wash earlier today and there was still a leak. I used non-bio powder and a small amount of residue was still there, but this time it didn’t smell! I intend to continue using powder (with the odd liquid detergent wash).
Thanks very much again Steve and Seamy. Once again, if anyone else sees this post and wants to jump in with advice regarding curing the filter leak or eliminating the smelly residue, please feel free.
Kindest regards

This model of machine often has problems with the wash-circulating pump (Jet system) getting blocked and the flow of water stops as a result. Can I ask you therefore to check to see that during the wash cycle water flows from the top inlet nozzle of the grey door seal and into the centre of the drum?
If it doesn’t then , as my colleague mentioned earlier, both that system and the pump manifold may need some serious cleaning attention. And time to call in the experts.

Hi Martin,
Thank you very much for your kind advice.
From the wash starts I’ve seen over the last few weeks, it does look as if the wash cycle water is indeed flowing ok, ie from the top inlet nozzle into the drum centre, so I’m not 100{e5d1b7155a01ef1f3b9c9968eaba33524ee81600d00d4be2b4d93ac2e58cec2d} sure that the pump is the guilty party here. However I will indeed double check this by starting a non-detergent wash and confirming that the water flow is ok.
Thanks very much again Martin, Steve and Seamy. Once again, if anyone else sees this post and wants to jump in with advice regarding curing the filter leak or eliminating the smelly residue, please feel free.
Regards

ParticipantRe: Zanussi WJS1397W – stinking and leaking – Possibly cured
Hi,
Just to let anyone else with this model know what’s happened so far.
1) The leak now seems to be cured, because the fluff filter rubber seal has to be stretched to fit snugly around the disc (or hilt) of the plastic filter. I had been placing the seal behind the hilt, as I thought it originally had been placed. I’ve done two washes and the leak hasn’t reappeared.
2) The stinking grey soap sludge has reduced because I’ve (a) been using non-bio washing powder (not liquid) to wash clothes, (b) been running the machine on cleaning cycles with either bio powder or Dr Beckmann cleaner, and (c) been cleaning the fluff filter after every wash cycle.
Today we took the machine back/top off, and used a flexible metal snake to rod the outflow pipe. No special tools needed, just a bucket and some old towels to mop up.
The sludge will probably take a good few more cycles to eliminate but I remain hopeful.
I hope this may be of some help to others. Thanks very much again to all the kind people who gave advice and also to this forum.
