ParticipantHi,
Last night I accidentally overloaded my machine, I didn’t realise there was a big towel hiding in the load. The wash stopped part way through, I assume because it was too heavy and out of balance. I took everything out and just put in what I would class as a light load (a few shirts and a wee towel), and whenever it tries to spin it is massively out of balance and jumps around.
I wondered if anyone could suggest a reason? My thought was that perhaps I had bent something, but if I set it to spin with no load it is totally smooth. My other thought was that perhaps I had broken one of the shock absorbers, but on taking the back off they look ok and are still attached at both ends. My only other thought was that perhaps the shocks were knackered by the heavy load. There just seems to be far too much movement of the barrel
Does that sound plausible?
cheers
russ

If you set it to spin with no clothes in does it ramp up to speed slowly or go right into spin?

I think it was pretty much straight up to speed quite quickly. But with a light load in it doesn’t even get up to a very high speed before it’s jumping around violently!

I just double checked, it was probably up at full speed within a second. And it only continued to be powered for about 2 seconds before it slowly freewheeled down to stopped

Sounds like a quite common tachometer failure. The small round magnet often comes adrift

Is that something I could fix myself without having to buy in parts?

It depends on which type of motor is fitted. The tacho coil and magnet are on the end of the main motor, opposite end to the pulley. Sometimes the tacho magnet is covered and it will be obviously loose, it just needs screwing back in.
Sometimes the tacho coil covers the magnet and gets pushes off by the loose magnet.
Also the wiring to the tacho can break giving the same symptoms.April 11, 2012 at 10:54 am #373028frootloops

ok cool, thanks for the info. I’ll take the back off again and see if I can spot anything loose. And this tacho problem would cause the out of balance issues I am seeing? I guess because the machine just tries to spin up to full speed straight away?
Think I might just bite the bullet and get either an ISE or a Meile, getting fed up with fixing the zanussi, but it’s lasted me 12 years so not bad going.

Worth checking it out first, place some protection on the floor and carefully lie it on its back to access the motor tachometer.

I think this is the part you are referring to?

Everything seems to be in place and the wires all look ok….I think

That does look physically OK, a megger on the tacho connections would confirm its electrical condition, but the magnet could be loose underneath the coil ( the doofer with the two yellow wires going to it).

Thanks for all your help iadom. I decided to call it quits, and bought an ISE instead!
