KeymasterI’ve been on phones today for NW as Nicola is off and a few calls have set me thinking while I was updating the NW website.
I have been quite surprised by the number of customers that have found us through the website, including a number from outside our area that I send to Ally, Al or the UKW search. On top of that the number that have phone in to ask if we’ll repair a XXXXXX that isn’t on the site.
But what I was thinking about earlier was, does a well maintained website that gets traffic and enquiries hold a value?
If you think about it, loads of guys in the old days used to sell their “business” which usually amounted to heap of scruffy old stock, perhaps a van and a telephone number. The whole notion of “goodwill” was, IMHO, worthless.
But my thought for the day was, is a website different?
My conclusion was that it is.
The thinking is that with a website you can measure how popular it is and, perhaps not now but in the not too distant future, you can see what sort of enquiries and how many it generates.
Asides which, older domain names that have relevant URLs and content are worth money as they hold authority. Now, that could change but, somehow, I doubt it will and would almost certainly always be a factor.
So, my thoughts ran to, well if someone wanted to sell up and retire and they didn’t have a website, stuff that.
If they did have a site that was well ranked and the customers used it then it might just be a different proposition or, at least, it may give pause for thought before dismissing it as another telephone number and some scruffy old stock for sale. The site could be worth more than all the rest!

You’ve lost me Ken, seriously I’m struggling to understand “your thoughts” here in spite of reading it over again twice more. “stuff that.” in the first paragraph and the entire second paragraph…dunno? 🙁

The thinking is Martin, does a good site make your business worth buying or, a more attractive purchase.
Basically, without any ageist comments. 😉

yeh i would agree ken something ive been half thinking about
you never know some of the big boys may even buy it to have a local presence,
but i suppose how would you put a value on it and how could you prove what level of business its achieving .
but in theory yes the right buyer could possibly pay out if they see value.

As I said to Lawrence earlier…
The website could be more valuable than the rest of the business!

Yes, a good website which ranks well and generating traffic is very valuble, I check traffic with smarter stats which lists the highest keywords used to arrive at my site, gives me a good idea about what people are searching for. I have just updated my site and included a live feed on latest news on UKW which should help even more. I will be spending a lot of time adding stuff and products as well, hopefully increasing value in the future as I think I could sell the site to someone and they would earn income from day one from it.
