Hi All
I’ve got an issue with a BDW129 washer/dryer and want to have a look at fixing it myself. I used to be an engineer so I’ll take anything apart and have a go, if only to save some cash!
The washer part seems to work fine, however the dryer system doesn’t. The machine just runs and runs on the dry cycle, only I don’t think it’s drying i.e. not heating up, as I can’t feel any warmth from the machine. It doesn’t spin fast, just rotates slowly and there doesn’t seem to be any water in the bottom of the drum that I can see. I’ve tried this on drying only, and wash cycles which should continue to drying with the same results.
I’ve cleaned the drain part on the bottom right front where there is an impeller pump (I’m assuming this is a the drain pump?) and it looks fine. The pump is working every few minutes for about a minute and there doesn’t seem to be a build up of water like it’s not being pumped away. There is a small amount of water appearing from the left hole of this pump every few minutes and it’s no more than about a pint.
There are no error codes/flashing LEDs indicating abnormality.
I’ve searched this site and found a thread which talks about the dryer element, a fan and maybe a thermosensor or two so I’m going to take the back off and take a look. What sort of resistance should I be finding if I do a continuity check on these parts. I’m guessing 100 ohms or something for the element and similar for the windings of the fan motor? Any other tips on things to look out for would be greatly appreciated.

Hotpoint BWD129 dryer fault
The dryer overheat stat has tripped I would imagine. Taking the back off won’t show you diddly.Power off, lid off, then use you engineer skills to check it out. 😉

Thanks for your reply, Martin. I should add that I was an electronics engineer and not a washing machine engineer!! Any clues as to what the thermostat looks like and where it is exactly?

Well I think I’ve found everything… the fan is turning but slowly and quite noisily. The element resistance is about 43ohms but there is no supply to it, unless it doesn’t get any power immediately when the dry cycle starts? The thermostat I’m assuming is the black round thing on top of the fan/element housing, and the resistance of that is 27.5kohms. Should this either be open or closed?

That is the ntc and sounds fine. The cut out is inside the sheathed cable, if the fan is rough then that may be why the cut out has failed.

that’s great, thanks for your help. the cut out is, indeed, open circuit and i have got 220v on the supply side of it. the fan seems to free up once the cover is off and it’s a bit clagged but i might order another anyway. so i just need the cutout and fan then? i’m tempted to short the cutout to test it out but that’s probably not wise??
actually, now i’ve checked the price for the fan motor (£80!!!!) i think i’ll just clean it and take a chance!

If you clean up the fan and it spins smoothly then I would just get the TOC.

Well I must say thanks for your help. Just ordered one so fingers xd that will sort the problem and I’ll have saved a few quid! What an awesome site this is!! :tup:

Quick update: this has solved the problem in case anyone experiences the same. The part cost £7 and it all took about half an hour with cleaning the fan out. The cutout was open circuit. Thanks again. 🙂
