    Hi

    After 10+ years of use including three children in the last eight years our Zanussi Nexus washing machine is in need of replacement. Apparently the regulator is shot which is why it’s been shrinking my shirts over the past few months.

    As such, I’ve done a fair bit of reading on here about washing machines and am certainly more knowledgable than I was when I started…whether I’m any better prepared to make the right purchasing decision is another matter!

    I’m leaning towards a Bosch WAQ as I’ve seen them recommended on here, but thought I’d take the effort to see if anyone can offer any other advice.

    Essential questions/answers;

    How often do you use the machine?
    On average probably once a day, but clustered into several washes on a few days.

    How many people’s clothes does it wash?
    Five

    Are there any special needs (skin conditions or suchlike)?
    Would like a usable 30 degree wash and something to cope with muddy cycling/rugby kit

    What sort of floor is it installed on?
    Tiled

    Do you line dry wherever possible?
    Yes

    What is your budget?
    £500

    I’m assuming that if budget was removed from the equation the ISE would be most people’s recommendation. But given current finances I’m struggling to rationalise spending that kind of money.

    So, what are people’s thoughts? And why is it the WAQ series of Bosch that I’ve seen recommended as opposed to other models?

    Oh, and finally if it was available in silver then apparently it would look nicer in the kitchen 😉

    Thanks

    I would get a second opinion on the Zanussi first. Which ‘regulator’ is shot. The water temperature is controlled by an ntc which is not very expensive.

    Then why not go for the WAE244S1GB instead as everything you ask after is contained in this model…?

    Thanks for the replies….and to answer both in turn;

    iadom,
    I have no idea which regulator, the engineer who came and looked at it checked the thermostat which was fine but said the regulator was shot and would cost a small fortune to replace, hundreds for a new one and £150 for a used one. I’ve also just been told that the door seal needs replacing and that the control dial is broken…you can tell I use it loads 😉

    Does the above sound plausible, or would you still get a second opinion?

    Martin,
    I am curious as to what the differences are between the various WA* models, I’m sure that I read somewhere that it’s to do with different motor types, with the WAQ model featuring a motor that had essentially been unchanged since the 90’s. The implication being this was a good thing, and I’d prefer reliability over style.

    Does anyone know whether this is true, or whether it actually matters?

    Thanks

    Yes.. I would advise you to get a second opinion if it is not going to increase your costs.

    Point 1. It would depend on your model as to whether you have a thermostat or not but from what you have described I asume that you have and that it has failed… Some thermostats have regulator type body behind them and if this is what the engineer is describing then they are not expensive to buy or fit.

    Point 2. Door seals for the Nexus range from £15 upwards, they are not that dificult to change and dials usually cost even less.

    If the machine is in otherwise good condition and you are wanting to keep it because it is normally reliable, I would say pay to get it repaired and serviced.

    Also look at the Gorenje WA73160 has all you want within your price range and serviced by Independents 😀

    If you give us the full model number and if possible the pnc (product) number we can check on your exact appliance.

    Very few machines have used thermostats for many years now, they use an ntc or electronic sensor, this is controlled by the main pcb. It’s rare to hear that called a ‘regulator’ which is why I suggested a second opinion.

    Morning All

    Machine details are;

    Mod. Fl 1082
    Type P6596174
    Prod No. 914789553 01

    I’ll give the independent engineer a call (£10 charge and hasn’t tried to sell anything) a call and get a more detailed description of the fault as I’m only relaying information from my head of laundry/wife (hope she doesn’t read this!)

    Just had the thumb screws out and quizzed the head of laundry for further details, and during an explanation about temperatures and regulators she mentioned that the problem was to do with the machine not going through its program fast enough, causing washing to sit in hot water, and that program’s are taking longer than they should, and it needs a new system board to fix the problem.

    Not sure if that helps at all, but I guess it explains why it would cost so much to fix.

    Thanks for the continued responses.

    It’s 10 years old, the “head of laundry” not best pleased at this latest development. Chances are the decision has already been made and your next task is to buy a suitable replacement machine. I doubt a quick fix will suffice. Bin it and buy a Bosch is my advice. 😉
