In 1998 I was called to look at a freezer that was 25 years old…it was cream crackered!….but….next to it stood a GEC fridge quietly humming away getting on with its job. Obviously an oldie I asked the customer about it…it was made in 1928, bought by the customer second hand in 1956 and had survived six house moves! It was a joy to behold…cast iron scrolled legs, big chrome handle, and an icebox about the size of a loaf of bread!
Now for any mechanical item to be functioning correctly after 70 years is an achievement….but….doing the maths in terms of what the customer paid for it, what it might have been when new and comparing it to an average weekly wage (all very inaccurate I know), we guesstimated between us an equivalent price today of somewhere between £3,000 and £5,000 😯
So….the moral?….we really DO get what we pay for 🙂
