ParticipantHi All,
With my impending redundancy on the horizon in the next few weeks from Comet, I have been asked to travel to Leeds to sit a trade test? Anybody done this recently or know what it entails. Is it a paperwork exercise or practical as the lass on the phone was a bit vague?May 25, 2012 at 5:26 pm #375516dave320

Hi there, the trade test is quite a basic test with multiple choice questions but any white goods engineer with any experience will find it very easy I’m sure. What area are you from and what patch have you applied for?

It is a ‘closed book’ test where you are questioned on your knowledge of the skillsets to which you have applied. Interrogating your electrical know how and may involve you needing to demonstrate your knowledge of electrical testing (insulation tester/loop tester) with test meters provided. If you apply for gas then the usual CCN1 tests will be included also.

Thanks for the replies. The area I’m going for is in the North West and I know a couple of ex Comet lads who went to BG about 6 years ago who cover Merseyside that I used to work with. I worked for Candy for 16 years specialising in refrigeration (was not a service engineer at the time but a design and developement engineer working in the UK and Italy in the Brugherio plant) and been with Comet 11 years, the last 5 as senior engineer. Do everything, w/m, dryers cookers, refrigeration, elec cookers, gas cookers (NG and LPG, D/W so hopefully I should be OK.
Many Thanks againMay 25, 2012 at 8:13 pm #375519dave320

Gas appliances are repaired by the gas side of the business so although a great qualification to have it will serve no use at BG, system refrigeration is done by one or 2 engineers max per team (average team 18-20 engineers) however ive heard that this will be contracted out in the near future. When you say merseyside if it’s he Wirral area I know the manager and engineers very well. BG are recruiting all over atm I’ve just recommended someone for Birmingham area

Hi Dave,
Yes, the Wirral. Used to work with Keith Mc and Alan B. I work with Alan’s missus here at Comet at the moment in Skelmersdale.May 27, 2012 at 7:31 am #375521dave320

Yes I know both of them, alan is a cracking bloke we were in the same team until they moved the patch areas around in December. The manager for the Cheshire area is a good guy too. The Wirral has always been a busy area the 3 engineers up there are busy all the time and its gonna get busier when this contract with a big high street retailer starts. Did Alan or Keith refer you?

No Mate, BG approached us. I know about the contract, my guys are still snowed under with work with 11 jobs a day and I have 11 white Goods guys covering Merseyside and local North Wales . As far as I know, I’m the only Comet engineer looking at the Wirral. I’ve got one of my Manchester Engineers doing his assessment next week for the North Manchester area. I’m the area manager at the moment but only been off the tools for 6 months.

Ahh right, when do you guys finish then? I’d heard rumours BG had approached comet are they interviewing all your engineers?

They did interview a few but the ones they interviewed didn’t want to stay with Comet for another 3 months for the redundancy money and went to Hotpoint and Hoover early. We got asked to send our CV’s into a list of companies, BG being one of them. Our HR dept sent us a list of companies around the UK that would be looking for White Goods engineers so it was up to the individual, which one he applied for. The lads with 12 years or more service go on the 31st July, that’s the final day for everyone. The first guys start to leave the week after next, then more each week ( ie 5 years service, 5 weeks notice, 7 years, 7 weeks etc) until we finally close.
