ParticipantI inherited theis machine when moving house. Over the last few months we have noticed small black circular stains occaisionally on washing, similar to the pattern of holes on the inner drum. The machine has now started to knock on spin nd the inner drum has some play in it. I’m guessing the bearings have died. My question is how and how easy is it to replace these? Do I need to remove the drum completely or can I replace with outer drum in situ? And if so do I go in from the front or the back?
Thanks

Yes, it does sound like the bearings have failed.
And, you are correct, the hole tank has to come out in order to replace the bearings in the washing machine, there’s a bit more on that here:

The bearing kit you need should be this one if you do decide to replace them:

It’s not an easy DIY job.

TBH, It sounds more like the alloy drum support has broken, the black marks will be alloy deposits.
Caused by years of low temp washes, especially when used with liquids.
I fear it may well be BER. 🙁

Thanks Kwatt and Iadom
I thought the drum support was on the exterior of the drum. I’m intrigued though, why does low temperature washes and particularly with liquids affect the support?
The bearings are not that expensive but the job seems a pain. Is there anything I can do to confirm it is the bearings before I consign it to the tip?
I think the machine is about 10 years old, so it’s not done bad I suppose.

I’ve been fixing Zanussi machines now for best part of 29 years and I can confirm that the latter option is your best next move.

The bearing support is on the outside on some machines but not all, the drum support is fixed to the inner drum.
Its a very common failure in this area, seems to be worse in soft water areas but is always linked to constant low temperature washes. If the temperature does not reach at least 60° on a regular basis it allows this type of corrosion to get into the alloy. A 60° or higher wash with a good quality, green box detergent allows the bleach in the detergent to clean out the innards.
Here is a drum support from a high end, German made AEG machine.
