Got to look at two brand new Fisher and Paykel single dishdrawers tomorrow morning in two very posh boats ( slippers on ), Fairline Boats have installed these dishwashers in a couple of Squadron 65’s boats/ yachts / ships and both don’t work.

I found out that these have been brought over from the USA so are 120v 60hz models and they are being run on transformers but have just noticed that the electrical supply for the boats is 230v 50hz.

Is there a transformer that can change the frequency and if not will this be the problem??

    thanks

Have come across probs, seem to remember it was 110volt twin phase american machines which wouldn,t run on a single phase 110v supply.
Start from scratch checking the dishwasher electrical spec and the transformer output to ensure they match.
Did Fairline’s fridges in a previous life!

    Thanks Spimps,

I know the dishwasher is 120v 60hz and the supply is 230v 50hz so I will check out the transformer specs in the morning.

you can change voltage but not frequency without using electronics
have had a lot of ships using 60hz and the 50hz wont run not sure if its the same the other way round.
the motors will run slower ie if there doing 600rpm on 60 hz they will only do 500 rpm on 50hz
also the motor resistance will change with the frequency so motors will draw more current and may overheat

    hope it helps

My personal take on this is that someone has quite clearly bought the wrong appliances for that particular installation and the correct ones need to be obtained. End of. It’s not as if a couple of grand here and there is going to make much difference anyway. Whilst an interesting exercise in electrical theory, I would just bat it right back to them.
    Just my two penn’orth….

totally agree with that point. the ship problem stems from where they are made. they are built with whatever domestic supply is available and this has a knock on effect for all electrical products during the life of the ship.
get these probs every now and again. customers who import electrical product without asking first and then suffer the conseqences

The appliances are the correct ones as the boats are being shipped to the USA, I Looked at these this morning and they had been tested on a big generator, it was set for 60hz but it looks like the voltage was at 220v. Both dishwashers have blown control boards.

    simple, nothing….

Both these appliances are fitted to boats that are due to be shipped to an agent in the USA in the next couple of months. Parts for these will not be available for months in the UK so the easiest way to solve it is for the agent in the USA to get the local F&P guys out who should have stock of the main controllers.

two jobs closed and completed 😀
