My name is Martyn and I am conducting research into the lifespan of Washing Machines. This is for my university course on waste management.

There are a couple of small prizes to be won when the survey closes at the end of August.

I’d also be keen to speak to anyone in the repair industry on a few issues relating to second hand washing machines. Im investigating ways to prevent working/repairable appliances being scrapped.

    Hi Martyn,

    You could start with these…

And a few more in the same section of the site.

Thanks to those who have completed the survey so far. Some intersting patterns are appearing. More responses are welcomed!

Also would any repairers say that some makes of washing machines are not designed to be repaired? I’ve read that some bearings are sealed and cannot be replaced. Same with brushes. That would mean the entire machine is junked after a fixed number of cycles.

Also what is the opinion on spin speed vs lifespan. I’ve seen some 900rpm hotpoints that look 25 years old but work as good as new.
