We have an Indesit WIB111 UK which is about 4 years old yesterday it started to make a strange rubbing noise during spin cycles then at the main spin cycle the drum stopped turning and the machine tripped the RCD in the consumer unit.

On further inspection, the motor spins OK when it has no load on it (belt disconnected) but the motor sparks wildly from the brushes area (where the rubbing noise is eminating from) and eventually the machine trips the RCD again….

I’ve taken the brushes off and they seem short in comparison to pictures of new ones and they have groves horizontally across the ends of them (as if split into two) which seam to be rubbing against the groves on the motor spindle making the noise.

Could the brushes need replacing or it is something more problematic?

The machine has had a lot of extra use recently due to a new baby in the house…..

With the cost of new brushes compared to a new motor there is only one way to proceed. 😉
