I wonder if anyone can offer any ideas what the problem could be or what else I can do to diagnose it further?

If I run program E which is just meant to be a cold rinse it does the following:
Pumps out remaining water fine (I can hear it from the sink)
Takes in more water (I can hear the water in the pipes)
Pauses with a humming noise for about 10 minutes
Humming noise stops and lights 1+2 start flashing
Open the door and there’s an inch of water at the bottom, and it looks like no water has actually been sprayed out (there’s still bits of soap/food on the inside)

The water pumps out fine next time I try to start the cycle again, so I don’t think there’s anything wrong with the drain pump (I also took it off and it’s clean with nothing blocking the rotors).

1+2 is a drain time out, however I suspect your main circulation pump is faulty, hence the humming noise and no wash action.

The drain pump on some models is routed through the circulation pump so if the main motor is seized then the internal motor overload will trip after a while and at the same time stop the drain pump from running.

Its a 100{e5d1b7155a01ef1f3b9c9968eaba33524ee81600d00d4be2b4d93ac2e58cec2d} Indesit machine, motor is £100+, might be time to invest in something decent. 😉

iadom is correct about the fault code and the circ pump will cause this fault to show but before you shell out for a circ pump its worth checking the circ pump is not jammed just try turning the shaft manually with a flat blade chubby srewdriver if it turns freely then is worth changing capacitor on the pump (4uF if memory serves me)these do go from time to time pretty cheap to buy.

Thanks for the tips, will try out at the weekend. When I had it open I did notice rust around the main motor so suspect that it probably has seized. Also yes it did seem the drain was somehow connected with the circulation pump.

I inherited it with a new house, so wasn’t really expecting it to be working, but I’ll try and turn the motor by hand and replace the cap if it turns.
