ParticipantThis morning my Hotpoint Ice diamond 8321 compressor stopped running. There is power to the fridge freezer and when I switch off the appliance and turn it back on again you here a click noise once. Then if you leave it switched on there will be a click noise again say every 5 min as if the compressor is trying to start but can’t. Is there a way to reset the electrics of the compressor or something similar to that? Is the compressor broken? Is there a simple way to check and see what the problems might be. I figure I have a few more hours before the contents of the freezer goes in the bin 🙁
Many thanks.

I guess it is probably not worth trying to get a new compressor for it?
The fridge freezer dates from 1984 and I would imagine spare parts will no longer exist. Do you think it is worth fixing?August 15, 2012 at 6:54 am #379423Dales-Electronic

It rather depends on a couple of things – is it in good condition and do you like it. Take that a step further and note that it was British built in Peterborough and quality was more important then. Now look at whats on offer and in most cases cost is more important than quality. If you can find a half decent fridge engineer around you then I might consider a repair – parts can be sourced to do the job. 😀

I quite like the like the old thing. However, I went browsing today and came across a Lec R5010W under the counder fridge with a small freezer box. Are LEC still a good make of fridge? It was on sale for 159 with 2 years warranty.

Nope.
Now owned by GDHA and, as far as I am aware, all the current crop of LEC are rebadged Chinese machines. Not great quality and probably a severe lack of any spares a few years (if that) down the road.

Forget down the road, we can’t get spare parts for items that are still in warranty. Not all chinese, some turkish but equally long lead times on parts. 🙁

I see. I went to Comet and Currys to have a look at some more but they did not stock any Liebherr or Bosch. Could you recommend a model that would be similar to a Lec R5010W interms of form factor? The sale assistant in Currys tried hard to get me to buy their own brand machine and warranty. Do you know who makes them for Currys? The sales assistant claimed she did not know.

Most of it likely comes from the same factories that produce LEC.
Currys, Comet, Argos and a plethora of others aren’t interested in quality appliances so far as I can see but are interested in margins, cheap ticket prices and selling you a warranty. If that’s what you want, they’re fine. If not, best look elsewhere.
