crash
ParticipantHi,
My Admiral Fridge/Freezer GC2224GEKW 2006 has now developed a further fault. The fridge is very often getting too cold. The automatically controlled flap is not closing in accordance with the temperature setting (4) and just gets colder and colder. I had a look today and the problem was compounded by an ice build-up at the bottom of the flap which stopped it from closing; that’s if it was trying to. The spring is in place just as it should be. I have melted the ice and changed temps to see the flap in action. All seems to be OK but once back together again, and the door closed, the flap stays open and the temperature plummets. I decided at -1C that it wasn’t doing what it should as the temperature selector is set to 1 at present. I turned the whole unit off, left it a while, and then turned it on again. The flap still seems to be reluctant to close once the cold air starts coming through.
The damper flap motor is quite noisy and sounds quite ‘mechanical’ when it is in operation. Is this normal?Does anyone have any suggestions? I suppose that the two possible culprits are the damper flap unit and the thermostat.
As I was typing the flap snapped shut, so I left it and turned the temp down (3). The flap opened as it should and after a while I have just turned the temp up again (1). It closed as it should. Either this was a glitch which has gone away or it points to an intermittent fault with something.
It’s a bad sign when I know the model no. without looking. 👿
As always, any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Yup. 😉
TBH I’d suspect the flap.

Thanks for the vote for the flap. It does seem to be behaving itself at the moment. I am stepping the temp down one step at a time. Flap opens, cold air and after a while it shuts. Intermittent……….the best kind of problem.
Is the noisy flap motor normal? It’s been that way since we got it new.Cheers

Yeah, it’s a little motor so you will hear it whirring open and shut.

Does the new damper unit come with the heater mod fitted?
If not then I believe it has to be separately wired in to the light circuit, a mod definitely not for me. Is there an engineer in the house?
If it’s the damper I just need, is this it?

i wouldn’t change the damper unit just yet.
this model did have an issue with freezing in the fridge, caused by a sticking damper, in turn caused by ice inhibiting the closure of the flap.
there is a heater foil that fits around the damper unit that solves the problem, not sure of the part number.
i’d go for that.
the damper does make a loudish whirring noise as it’s operating, but the noise only lasts for 10 secs or so, this is normal.cheers.

Thanks, Alf. Since yesterday’s problems the damper has been behaving impeccably. The temp is holding constant like it never has before. I will give Maytag/Whirlpool a call and try and source this heater.
Cheers

Hi, This is a bit late for you but may help someone else. We had the advice to do an overnight defrost on this problem. We put the food in cool bags and after four hours it seemed all thawed so we turned it on again.
When we put in the new damper (£50) the old one was packed full of ice so if we had done a proper overnight thaw we may have saved some trouble. Nothing seemed wrong with the old one when removed, but the problem didn’t occur again when the new one was fitted! Of course being this model it just waited four weeks and developed a fresh problem. -
