ParticipantGood evening all,
A customer reported that the above m/c began tripping the electrics recently after about ten minutes operation.
When I visited, the unit did trip as reported. This was re-set, and did not trip until around forty minutes later.
I removed the live heater terminal, and shortly after re starting the unit tripped again.
I re-connected the terminal and re-tested the operation. It very quickly tripped again.
Therefore, I suspected the heater unit, and returneed home in order to provide a quote.
In the meantime I disconnected the live terminal, and put the m/c on a rinse programme… all o.k.
However, the customer contacted me over the weekend to let me known the m/c had tripped again. (with heater disconnected)
Therefore, I returned the unit home for further investigation.
It has not tripped following three separate programmes whilst here.
I have reconnected the heater terminal, and power is being supplied to the heater, although not heating water.
Has anyone come across such a fault?
Kind regards,Jon

😕 How can power be supplied to it without it heating? Presumably you have checked that it is reading 30 ohms or so across the disconnected terminals (or it might be 25 or I don’t know, something like that). If it’s reading much higher ohms than that, (anything above 40 really) then it’s a straightforward case of duff element with the internal heating wire intermittently making contact with the element sheath.
I don’t think it would be enough to only disconnect the live terminal when testing like that as a leakage to earth can still happen via the neutral.
Other than that don’t forget to check the board for burning around heater relay and if you find anything check if it’s on the re-call model list.

Thanks LMTGOWI,
Removed and renewed heater unit, to cure tripping fault… stripped unit, and element burnt in one area.
