    Hi Guys,

I’ve got an Admiral GC2224GEKB side-by-side fridge, which we took ownership of when we moved house. I guess it must be 7 years old (as that’s the age of the house).

Every 10 days or so, the fridge seems to stop cooling properly, the temperature rises to around 10C. The freezer seems to still work (but I don’t know if it’s cold enough).

I took a look behind the freezer panel and the coils were all frozen up, so the first time I left it to defrost for a day… then the fridge worked great. Subsequent times, I’ve just melted the ice off with a hairdryer and then it works again.

Also, up until a few weeks ago, the fridge/freezer would also leak a big puddle on the floor occasionally. I presume this must be the auto-defrost or something.

I took a look at the tray in the bottom, and it wasn’t full and the water tube from the bottom of the freezer was sitting in it correctly (so I guess it’s overflowing, cracked or coming from somewhere else).

Is this a fix I can do myself, or if I do get an engineer out is it something that would be cost effective to fix? I’m concerned that it may cost a few hundred to repair a 7 year old fridge, so may be better to bite the bullet and get a new one?

Any help you can give would be much appreciated!

BTW, in case it helps – the Icemaker/panel also doesn’t work properly (just two flashing lights)… but that’s not as important as the rest!

Hello, the appliance isn’t defrosting the evaporator like it should do regularly.
It does this by way of a heater which sits underneath all the ice in your pic!
Likely cause is the heater itself, although you could be unlucky and it be the pcb.
The water issue is just likely to be a blocked drain hole or pipe.

    Cheers.

Thanks for the reply :). Is this something easy enough to fix myself? If not, how much do you think it would be for an engineer to fix (just a rough guess!).

Hello, the trick is in identifying the faulty component.
That’s the real skill in this job. Fitting parts is easy and I’m sure, with the greatest of respect, fitting a defrost heater is well within your capabilities.
Do you have a meter? Can you check the heater? If not, then you can’t guess and it sounds like it’s engineer time.
I wouldn’t like to put a figure on the job as it would obviously depend on the firm’s call out costs, but also the source of the spare part.
Have you used the engineers search facility on this site?
Where in the country are you?

    Cheers.

Thanks for the reply Alf! I’m based in South Manchester.

I’ve got a multi-meter so can go ahead and check the heater element… if I can identify it. Is it somewhere on the photo that I took? Do you know the approx resistance value I should be looking for?

Re: GC2224GEKB Fridge not working / Leaking

The heater sits at the bottom of the evaporator assembly. If you look at it closely, you’ll see the element come up the left hand side and you should be able to trace the wires to find the connectors to be able to test the heater.
I think you’ll just be looking for a reading to be honest. In the main, they go open circuit, although I have had one go short and so in that instance the appliance needed a new pcb as well.
We actually cover the south Manchester area, so if you get stuck, give us a call.

    Cheers.

Re: GC2224GEKB Fridge not working / Leaking

Thanks, I’ll test the heater later on today!

Would this also explain the leak? I’ve tried pouring water down the hole at the back of the freezer but it still pours out of the bottom of the fridge/freezer and on to the floor.

That’s a handy co-incidence that you cover this area, you may well be getting a call from me in the next few days :).
