    Hi,

I just wondered what the current recommendations for tumble dryers were?

I had a Whiteknight condensing dryer but now I have moved house, a condenser is not essential; I could go vented. I suppose the problem with vented is it allows the cold into your house through the ducting when the dryer is not in use. OTOH I sometimes found with the condenser dryer in my small utility room, that I needed the extractor fan on because the room got too hot!

I see there are heat pump dryers, which use half as much heat as “normal” condenser driers but does this extra layer of compelxity mean there is something else to go wrong?

I’m guessing Bosch is a recommended brand?

I don’t have mains gas, so a gas one isn’t really an option.

    Thanks.

    Hello,

To add to my earlier post, I have been looking athte Bosch web site; it seems vented dryers are C rated, condensers are B, and heat pump are A, so definitely energy savings to be had but presumably offset by differences in purchase cost.

One thing that is not clear: do the condenser dryers only drain into the drawer or can you plumb them into a drain?

    Hi

Great article here on tumble dryer buying advice.

    In a nutshell

Vented dryers are by far the most reliable machines, simple tech, not many bells and whistles and good value.

Condenser dryers have more tech and potentially less reliable. Some models can accomodate drain hoses for direct drain.

Heat pump dryers are energy efficient A rated machines but come at a much higher cost than the other two. If you do the sums you will see what I mean 😉

As for brands Gorenje and Bosch are both worth a look.

    HTH 🙂

Yes Stephen, you can buy a (Bosch) kit that pumps the condensate to drain, instead of having to empty the tank on a daily basis.

Thanks. That’s interesting. Any idea of cost? Is it a DIY job?

Yes, easy peasy. Cost about £9

Google Bosch WTZ1110 Condenser Drainage Kit

Well that’s a very good price but I have been told they cannot be fitted to the heat pump dryers because these are self-cleaning dryers. Does this mean the tray accumulates wet lint? Perhaps the pump will not cope with that?

Check out Siemens as they have some with a 5 year warranty and £75 cashback offers. A decent condenser dryer is efficient and reliable, you wont go wrong with bosch or siemens or miele if you can stretch your budget

Instead of the pump pushing the condensate to the inbuilt container it pumps it to waste! How difficult is that?

    Re: recommended tumble dryers?

Self cleaning condenser uses the water to rinse it self, so if it pumped it away down the drain it wouldnt be able to self rinse/clean! Thats why you cant put the drain kit on a heat pump machine with self clean.

I think there must be a way to do this, after all, the Miele does. It could store water in the tray until it needs to self-clean and at that point it could discharge into the drain.
