ParticipantAfter moving house, I placed our Beko freezer into the garage….
However it doesn’t feel very cold inside. The fridge is working as I have loads of nice cold beer. The freezer is certainly cold-ish, but not what I could call freezing! Sauces on microwavable meals are congealed, but not frozen.
Is this a problem in siting a freezer in a cold environment like a garage (ie the heat exchanger not working), or has the freezer just been knackered in the move?

If it is a fridge freezer then it will not work properly in an environment under 15 degrees.

Damn!
Is there any fridge/freezer that will work?
Or, is it possible to get a freezer-only that will work in a garage? Any suggestions?

Freezer only will work in garage.

Portal,
Most freezers will be perfectly happy in a garage or other unheated outbuilding. However a Fridge/Freezer will not simply because the ‘ambient’ temperature can get less than the internal cold setting of the fridge compartment. So therefore it will not work below that temperature 🙁
However, if you heat the room to ensure it never gets below that temperature, it will work just fine 🙂

Ah, I think I understand.
So, I need to replace my combined unit with a stand-alone freezer, and all will be OK.
I think I need to consider a stand-alone fridge too (or carry on using the fridge part of my current unit). I assume there is no problem with the fridge part? It’s just the combination/dependency that’s the issue, right?

If it is a conventional fridge(larder) there will be problems with it. However fridge with ice box(no auto defrost) should be o.k. The problem is with the fridge defrost function it has to get warm (ice turned to water)on the back wall before it will kick into life again. If the environment is too cold the compressor will not switch on therefore freezer will defrost as sensing is done in the fridge compartment.

Some fridge/freezers have a low ambient temprature switch wich will bring on a small heater inside the fridge to help it work correctlyin a cold location. I know servis have this in certain models but i dont the model no’s! 😆

Thanks all. Have ordered a new frost-free upright freezer (freezer only) for the garage.
Cheers

ps) Now what do I do with my Beko fridge/freezer, as it would appear even the fridge part is of little use outdoors!

Try Ebay!

ParticipantFair point actually; there is nothing the matter with the appliance beyond its inappropriate location, so why not? Got to be better than sending it to the Manchester Fridge Mountain.
Not much residual value really I’m afraid, make sure you make it “Local Pickup Only” if you do “eBay” it, and good luck!
