My daughter’s Hoover Optima OPH 716DF-80 has a loose drum paddle lifter which I cannot remove to check for the part number before ordering a replacement. I’m beginning to suspect it falls into the category which has a screw fixing from the rear !! Any ideas on accessing the screw without having to remove the drum?

Screw access through the sump hose aperture.

Re: Hoover Optima drum paddles removal

Interesting scenario – tried accessing drum paddle lifter screw through sump hose aperture but found, even with a cranked screw driver, I could not get directly onto the screw to get purchase. However, in the dead centre of the aperture between the rods of the heater element, sat the inviting reverse end of the locating lug of the drum paddle. Using the ‘pilot’ hole already in the lug, I inserted a no.4 x 12mm stainless steel self tapping pan head screw which took a generous torque and held the lifter rock solid. The pan head seated neatly into the existing depression in the drum and I repeated the exercise on the remaining 2 lifters – before they developed the same fault. Job done for a few pence and a damn sight easier than splitting the drum. Time will tell if they hold; already feel stronger than the original fitting.
Thanks Martin for directing me towards the sump hose aperture which provided me with this alternative solution.

Update – This machine now completed upwards of 450 washes and the drum paddles remain rock solid!
