ParticipantJust got a new american style fridge/freezer. Plumbed it three days ago but the ice maker has not started to produce any ice yet. The cold water dispenser works fine and the display screen shows the freezer temperature as 18 degrees and that the ice maker mode is turned on.
Anyone got any deas?? ❓

Is the ‘sensing bar’ in the ice bucket in the downward position? ‘Cos if it is in the upward it will not produce ice 😉

I didn’t notice a bar in the bucket. There is an infared sensor and receiver on each of the walls in the freezer. I beleive that it sends a beam accross and there is a hole in each side of the bucket which allows it to pass through when the door is closed. Once the ice goes over these holes then it should not produce any more. At least that’s my understanding! But I’m probably wrong.

No I’m sure your correct 🙂 Ah! so yours has the latest Infra Red Gizmo then? Not being conversant with those I cannot advise (best leave it for others to help out on that score 😉 )
I know with these ice making machines however, they can take an age to start producing ice, however I would have thought 3 days long enough. It would probably be best for you to contact Whirlpool Service Department for advice, certainly by day 5 at least 🙂

You are correct in the infra red controlling the ice production.
Just check the infra red beam can see side to side and that the left hand side transmitter is not restricted.I have also in the past found ice water valve wiring not connected at the valve on brand new appliances. Has your ice maker got any water in it?
However if this is brand new, you should call whirlpool service on 0870 6008989 from your home number to be routed through to their agent.
PS remember that when the door is opened on the freezer the infra red is broken by the hinge effect on the left hand transmitter.

Thanks Kevin. The infared sensor seems to be working as the light flashes when open and then stays on when I manually close the flap on the opposite side.
The ice cube tray is dry and there is no water coming out of the small pipe even though the drinking water part of the system works fine. I removed the lower back cover and the pipe going to the top of the machine (I assume this one is for the ice) is connected.
I’ve called out Whirlpool but they can’t get here for a couple of weeks. To be expected I suppose at this time of year. Shame as the ice would be handy during the festive period.
Thanks

ok, next is that there was an issue with the water pipe feeding the ice tray unfortunately suffered from freezing of the water before it could get out of the pipe, result no water and no ice.
So, the prongs of the ice maker what relative position are they(think of a clock face, if you are looking left to right, end on. The fill position is 12 oclock and the rest position is 2 oclock, as the fill is timed if in the “at rest position” then water supply is the problem.(is it frozen? If you look you can see it) If the prongs are in any other position then the ice maker or the rear power card is at fault.
There is a mod for replacing the inlet water pipe with one with a heater, its crap. If this is diagnosed you should demand an exchange from Whirlpool as “unfit for purpose”Hope this helps.

I’ve moved the prongs round to 12 oclock. They were at 2 oclock. I tried to see if the water was frozen but I did not really know where to look.
I also powered the whole thing off and back on from the mains.
Cheers

ok, the prongs should not move by hand, they are driven by a motor and module on the end of the ice maker.
So this is the possible fault.
Although you move the prongs you are not moving the switch gear.
It looks like you’ll have to wait for whirlpool service……
