ParticipantRe: Washing machine rentals.
Thanks for replys. I have been doing rentals for about 5 yrs now and have got about 280 machines out. I wanted to air the problem of customers who take machines in,don’t pay the rent and don’t want to give the machine up. We have all been there and probably like me you will have developed various ways of dealing with the problem. However solving it takes lots of time with people not answering letters, the phone or the door etc etc.
I am considering having a 3 month, latched relay, battery powered timer designed. If connected to the fill valves, the washine machine would break down 3 months after delivery. If the standing order was not set up and you had problems collecting the rent then the machine would be removed to the workshop for repair never to be seen again. If the customer was paying ok, then the timer would be removed.
The more units made would bring the cost down. What do you guys think??Mike.

Hi Mike
I used to recon about 80 wms a week. I had a few customers who used to take whatever we didn’t get through. One of them used to work for a business who had about 2000 wms out on rental and according to him had a device that was readily available to cut machines off from outside the building.
He said that as soon as you cut them off, they would be straight on the phone complaining that the wm did’t work!
I’ll give him a call tomorrow morning and find out a bit more if it helps….

This is an interesting idea what sort of money does someone pay
to rent a machine these days and also what machines last long enough to get a profit back on them .October 16, 2012 at 9:45 pm #382991admin

This rental thing seems a good idea just wondering is there a standard rental/lease form available and if you hire out new machines is the manufacturers warranty still valid.

Please remember that to rent machines out you need to have a consumer credit liscence, with out one you will be breaking the law.

As is fitting any device which by virtue of its design or inclusion is designed to prevent the correct operation of the unit, unless of course the customer agrees in advance of the contract being implemented to having the unit fitted.
Such matters fall into the Criminal category when committed and prosecuted.
I have some case law somewhere if you want me to dig it up?

Dave.I think that may be a key fob remote switching, which will need 12vdc in the machine. I would be very interested in what it was.
Larry. Profit is ok. £10 for recon hp, £15 for new amica with 2yr warranty and you get paid to fix them. I had a solicitor draw one up.
Dr Dill Yep,got it.

I would check the liability and product liability insurance as there was a case of a faulty rented washing machine ripped a little boy’s arm off a while back. Also I wonder if these machines are required to have a yearly service combined with safety checks? After all with the rental money would cover those extra expenses?
I’m not an expert in these things but I would be nervous about renting out machines knowing that the “hirer” will abuse it. The cost of repairing it could put you out of pockets lets alone the rental income. I’m surprised that there’s a market for it these days. I’d feel safer selling the recon machines.

You are correct, there are a lot of problems to it but there is a good living to be made. It is more profitable to rent a recon than sell it.
If you had a choice of a second hand machine from an advert and one of my rentals, then mine would be safer. I doubt whether the second hand machine would be safety tested as mine are each year. No matter how good we are,any machine we repair, rental or not has the possibility of taking a childs arm off. It is up to us all to minimise the possibility.
Getting back to the timer. Looks like this may be a non starter due to legal reasons.October 18, 2012 at 1:49 pm #382998twicknix

Interesting though I noticed you are from the Isle of Wight, so the market is different from the mainland. The reason why I said this that due to the vast space of mainland, people will travel easily to pick up cheap machines which makes renting seems a niche market for the poor.
There is this dreadful Brighthouse selling cheap machines for same price as the rental but in the end you get a brand new cheap washing machine for £800 instead of £200. Like I said they are dreadful but people still buys machines from them!
