Hello,
My wife got a shock from our electric hob last night – her finger brushed the side of an alloy pan. I took a multimeter to the hob and measured the potential between the rings and the kitchen sink and with the meter set to read AC it was reading anything between 10 and 120 volts. Obviously I have a problem but I don’t understand why the trip swich as the main fuse box did not trip ? The main box has an RCD for the 40A supply to the cooker and a main trip too ?
Any ideas ?

It sounds like a poor earth connection to me, as in the hob doesn’t have a good connection to the house earth circuit.
As you appear to have a knowledge of test equipment, have you tested the continuity between an exposed part of the hob and the sink.. with the power off ?

You’re right… by the time we discovered it I’d already had a few xmas drinks so it seems safer to turn it off and walk away from it ! I’m off home now ot discover what I can and that’ll certainly be one test…

Sorted,… One of the earth wires had come out in the main switch on the wall … the test I did last night no reads 0 volts !!! It’ll christmas dinner afterall !
