ParticipantI had a problem after cleaning Ariston Gas Hob. Igniter kept firing. I took out the igniter and dried it with a hairdryer, Did not work first time, then tried the hair dryer for longer.
I tested by conecting up the wires before reseating the igniter and this time it worked ok.
Trouble was that this second time I forgot to turn off the power at the wall when pushing the ignter button back into the cooker. One of the two terminals on the igniter just touched the metal side of the cooker top and there was a small short flash/bang.
The main wall switch showed that power was still on and the oven was still working ok. Only problem is that this time the igniter is not working.
I can get a replacement igniter button for around £15.00. But will this sort the problem. Is there maybe another fuse somewhere for the gas hob igniter that can be found and repaired. I looked under the lid and there is a flat red sort of electrical box thing. Is this fused?
Any help much appreciated.

You sound more like Mr Bean does DIY messing with a gas appliance with the power still connected. Before going any further can I suggest you evacuate all others within 100 yards of your property, just as a precaution you understand. :rolls:
And the model number of this duff, spark free appliance is? 😐

Yes, I admit I am totally dumb. It was just easier to test if the ignistion switch was dried out without putting nack in the holder. When finally it was all working Ok I was so pleased that I forgot to turm off at the wall. Pop/flash.
It is an old brown Ariston Electric oven with separate gas hob overhead. Must be at least 10 years old. No identification except Ariston.
There appears to just be the one main switch on the wall. Oven still works, just the igniter has stopped.

Well it sounds like your “flat red sort of electrical box” is the thing causing the problem. Though I dread to imagine the consequences of someone DIYing with a gas appliance with both the gas and the power still connected……….. 😯

Point taken and understood.
Is there a fuse in the flat red box, or would the whole box need replacing?
What would the part be called?
Thank you for your help and advice.

I think that you should not touch the appliance again, 3 rd time lucky to electrocute yourself. Heres some advice call an engineer in to fix it, its got to be cheeper than death! There really is no excuse to leaving an appliance plugged in then working on it.

The red box is an Ispra Control’s BF 50046 Spark Generator.
Will this be the item that will need replacing or is there a fused plug for the seperate gas hob as the electric oven underneath is still working). The wall moounted mains switch is still working.

The gas hob does require a separate 13amp fused power supply. So you are best advised to seek out where it plugs in and check the fuse. If you are indeed getting a 240v supply to the hob then it is very likely the spark generator is faulty and requires replacement.
As ever caution is advised at all times. :zap:
