Silly Woman
ParticipantHello,
I have just brought a second hand Bush Convection oven (mini oven) without instructions and it really needed a clean, so I used my trusty Lakeland Oven Gel all over the inside – now whatever coating was put on the oven has come off and left patches.Do you think it is safe to use? Or do you think I have ruined the coating and it could affect food cooked in it if I were to use it. I am thinking about throwing it out.
Thanks for your help…

I’m not familiar with Bush ovens but presumably you are referring to the catalytic liners? If so, oh dear big mistake and chances are they are now completely useless. Catalytic liners are a special coating that should not be cleaned or washed with anything. They’re designed to burn off fat and food deposits by simply increasing the oven temperature to the highest setting. That allows anything stuck on its surface to burn off (catalyse) and fall onto the floor of the oven. Now with the special coating damaged there is little hope of resurrection and only replacement liners will resolve the problem.
Lakeland Gel has a warning on the instructions NOT to use it on anything other than enamelled surfaces. 😉

Thanks for your reply Martin – I am not sure what I am referring to, catalytic liners?? I put this gel all inside the oven – the sides, base and roof, the gel absorbed and turned white (I guess a protective coating non stick for easy cleaning) – after realising my mistake and cleaning everything off, there are patches all over the oven inside. Looks as if someone has attacked it with a sander!
Do you think it is safe to use at all, given that I did all the sides and not just the base (which could have been rectified). Or do you think it is safe to use, but will be a nightmare to keep clean now.
Oh yes, my husband pointed out the instructions on the gel box afterwards, say no more…
I would be interested in your opinion – thanks.

Your reply confirms my suspicions, they are catalytic ( non- stick) liners as I thought and to coin a technical term are now bu&&ered. Continued use and the remaining pieces will cascade over your fairy cakes. The lingering smell of the Lakeland gel will taint the Sunday roast and give a new dimension home cooking.
Unless those catalytic liners are removable (on most makes they usually are by the way) then you can seek replacements. Until they arrive its best not to use the oven to be honest.

Thank you Martin & Dr Dill – I will retire the oven to the great recycling world and hang my head in shame for being so very stupid – thanks for all your help.

Please don’t beat yourself up over it as many have made that same mistake. A simple mistake after all said and done. Your keenest to clean is to be applauded and the vast majority of folks never fully read the cleaning instructions so you are not alone. 🙂 😉
