ParticipantI am trying to get some spare parts from a Zanussi tub, but can’t get the drum out. On this one the end of the drum shaft moved about half an inch, but will not move any further. I don’t want to hit the end of the shaft any more than I have.
Can I screw the pulley bolt into the shaft thread and give that a few smacks with a hammer in order to make it move, or do I risk the thread being destroyed, or the bolt getting stuck?
Also, would spraying wd40 onto the end of the shaft / front bearing be any help??
I don’t know if the bearings on this tub were any good, but I suspect they won’t be after all this hammering to get the drum out.

I use a copper head mallet won’t damage the shaft and saves a new pulley bolt

Surely the bearings are crook mate otherwise why bother hammering seven bells out of the drum shaft? WD40 won’t have much an effect either as that would be like a dog peeing on a flagpole with no chance of the flag getting wet!

Are you suggesting another way of doing it? I am trying to at least get the drum / spider from this tub, which might be OK. I have to get it out some how.

Not me mate just questioning why you have to do it if the bearings aren’t knackered?

I normally use a slightly longer bolt with an identical thread, ensure it screwed fully home into the shaft then whack the bolt head with a lump hammer. The drum/ shaft unit flies out of the bearing housing before you can shout ‘Hoover are crap!” 😉

I think you have almost certainly swaged the end of the shaft, you will need to carefully file the shaft back round.

Yep, it doesn’t look too pretty, but as long as I can get the pulley back on and I don’t damage the threads then I’m hoping it’ll be OK.

If you have swaged the end over you are not going to get it out! Its scrap!

Why do people on this forum want to make me cry. I’ll try the big bolt method and then I don’t know what.

I thought there was a catch to a forum for amateurs. Anything to cheer the mods up.

Bertie hasn’t told us exactly why he intends taking the drum out? Is it to make a brazier to roast his chestnuts on? Or a flower tub? Perhaps even a mash tun for his homebrew? 😕
