ParticipantHi,
I am having problems with my Hotpoint tumble dryer. I am experienced in repairing a number of my home appliances, but this one has me stumped.
It is a VTD60 tumble dryer and basically refuses to do anything! The ‘Clean Filter’ light is continually illuminated (but I assume this is normal as it should illuminate at the beginning of any programme). But no matter what setting the dial is set to pressing the ‘Start/Cancel’ button just results in the machine beeping three times.
I have stripped it down and cleaned bits of lint out from various places (nothing too major though). The two overheat stats on the heater are fine and are showing continuity when tested both independently and together. The heaters each show 48 Ohms which equates to 1100w each which seems correct.
The NTC thermistors both show a resistance of 748KOhms and this decreases with a rise in temperature as one would expect. The door switch operates and goes from open to closed when the door is closed.
Is there anything else that I may have missed? I notice there is a single black wire going to the front of the machine which connects to a metal strip about 15cm long just inside the door of the dryer, I presume this is nothing more than a method to discharge any static from clothing.
The PCB looks in ok condition with no obvious signs of component failure. Is there some way on this machine to put it into a test mode to indicate what is preventing it from starting?
Hopefully someone may be able to help!
Cheers,

The metal strip is part of the dampness sensing circuit.
Three beeps usually means that the door is not closed but you say the door switch is OK.
The machine should display error codes, there is no test routine that you can run without buying a special kit and a hardware key TBH.

Ah, I never considered that.
Yes the checks out ok.
I could check the pcb to ensure there aren’t any dry joints. Is this heard of? Does anyone know if my readings for the NTC’s are correct?
Thanks
Ian

The readings are about right but any faults on the machine except the door switch should throw up an error code????

Thanks again for your replt iadom.
Ok, so next test is the PCB for dry joints or similar. Can I assume that as changing the selector alters the display and buttons work etc that both PCB’s are/should be fine and it is possibly just a loose joint on the board?
Where would you go from here in diagnosing it?

It’s not safe to ‘assume’ anything with Indesit electronics . Gaining access to wiring diagrams and testing the basic circuits to and from the pcb etc would be my first step but I wouldn’t be wasting a lot of time on it, I have been bitten and left out of pocket to many times already. 😥

I have had a similar fault on a dryer of this type , it turned out to be a loose/dirty plug in type connector on to the board..
Pull them off in turn, and check them before reconnection, maybe this will rectify your fault

Cheers for the help so far.
Tonights job is to do some testing of the PCB (once I get to it – I had to put it all back together as the wife said it looked a mess in pieces!)
Any idea where I might get a wiring diagram?

Generally only available to company or franchised engineers, as they are copyright material we will not publish any thay we have online.

No problem I understand iadom.

Ok I removed the cob in the base and all looked clean and tested continuity wherever I could and no dry joints.
Still getting 3 beeps though. I bridged out the door switch no change…
Is there anything else I can test? There appears to be some test connectors accessible through the front plate. Can these be tested for anything?
I’d really rather not bin it to be honest but it’ll be cheaper to buy a new one then get a repair person out to it if I can’t track the fault down.
Thanks in advance for any suggestions

Those pins are for the hardware key, used for programming a new pcb or for fault testing with the hardware key, TBH the hardware key mainly only shows the same error messages as the facia display.
I am not sure if EMW will test or repair the pcb’s on these machines, always worth asking them.
