    Hi,

I’m part way through taking my washing machine apart, to change the
drum bearing, but I could really use a clue as to the next stage.

I’ve managed to get the grey plastic tub separated and so have the metal drum sitting inside half a grey tub on the floor. But what next? I can see part of the bearing from the outside (where the drivebelt wheel was bolted on), but that is all.

Do I just have to whack the exposed bit to separate the two? That seems quite drastic, but I suppose bearings often are!

    Thanks,

    Michael

Yes, the drum shaft needs to be pushed through the bearings. assuming you have already removed the drum pulley, pick the whole assembly up and ‘drop’ it, pulley shaft down, onto a protective piece of wood. A few drops from various heights usually is enough to push the drum and shaft through. If you do need to resort to wacking it with a hammer, ensure a piece of wood is protecting the shaft and that the pulley bolt is fitted to protect the thread. Unless of course you are changing the drum shaft/spider anyway in which case damage is not so much of a problem.

Thanks for the advice. I spent a good few hours banging and hitting it, but I couldn’t get it to separate.

In the end, I decided that if I couldn’t get the old bearing separated, I stood no chance at getting a new one fitted without damage. So I’ve disposed of the whole thing, and am having a new machine delivered on Friday.

If/when that one breaks, I’ll be back!

    Michael,

We would be curious to know what replacement you have chosen? And what factor/s made you choose that machine?
