    Hi all,

About 10 days ago my fridge freezer decided to defrost all over the kitchen floor. After clearing up and restarting it, it worked perfectly for a week, then defrosted again.

I rang a number from Yell.com and a guy came for a look. He checked the gas, condenser, fan, compressor, and seals, he found were fine. After about 10 minutes of being there he recommended it was like the PCB, but asked me to try it for a few more days. Since then it works some day but not others, randomly getting warm inside but working perfectly once I restart it for at least 12 hours.

Also, over the last 12 months the FF has been making some very loud cracks and bangs (I’m guessing this is ice defrosting).

Then I read a few posts on this forum talking about defrost heaters and thermostats. The symptoms for these failing sound far more likely than the PCB.

In the last 2 days its worked perfectly again, though when I checked it today the freezer temperature seems to have dipped to -25 from the usual -18. When I remove the drawers I can see frost behind the translucent cover over the condenser. Should this be happening? Is it a symptom of the defrost heater or defrost thermostat failing? PSB

Please can someone confirm what would likely be the reason for it warming up? PCB, heater or thermostat?

Impossible to say with out investigation but anyone worth there salt would have taken the multi flow off (that part in the picture) and had a look at what’s going on, tested the heaters ect.

On frost free models there are heaters to perform the defrost and if they fail you will get these sort of problems.

Hi, thanks for your reply its much appreciated. I completely agree, the more I learn about fridge freezers it seems more obvious he was either rushing or just keen to get me to buy the most expensive component first. Not only that but he charged me a call out fee after telling me there wasn’t one on the phone, and to make matters worse he lives about a mile from me. Sound guy.

So last night I decided to remove the cover from the back of the freezer and found that what had looked like frost was actually glue holding insolation in place. I found the heater which is a very flimsy bit of kit and the defrost control. Both look very easy to replace and so I’ll be attempting that myself should they prove to be faulty. My brother is an engineer so ill be asking him to test the two components for me.

    Fingers crossed!

Any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

One other question; when I turn on the fridge freezer I can see the flap turns continuously with the freezer door open. When I open the fridge door I hear a switch go and the flap stops. When I close the fridge again the flap spins over and over.

    Is that normal?
