i have a currys essential table top dishwasher; i do not need salt so i dont use it. the problem is, when the dishwasher is heavily loaded, the spray arm catches on the salt lid so i have just taken the lid off seeing as i dont use salt anyway and its stopped the spray arm getting stuck. is this ok or will it damage the machine in any way? thanks

Refit the salt lid and buy a new spray arm it’s worn!

You should always use salt in a dishwasher, it is used to flush the water softener out not used by the dishwasher in anyway during its wash cycle. Failure to do so will result in you having to replace the water softener module as some later stage which in your case is likely to cost more than the value of the appliance. 🙁

In this area most people do not use any salt, the water is very soft and I can honestly say that in 40 years I have never ever had a problem with a blocked water softener or resin chamber, never had to change a single one.
When I worked for Hotpoint I was designated as the dishwasher engineer for the North Manchester area, hardly any dishwashers sold in those days. We had a water hardness testing kit and the readings where always well below the levels advised for salt usage.

You are free to choose of course but I strongly advise you refit the salt cap and replace the faulty spray arm (or spray arm pivot) as I said before. Whether you reside in a soft water area is of little consequence to you using the salt or not. The fact remains that the salt cap must at all times be firmly in place to at least prevent dirty (grey) water getting into the salt container and polluting the entire water inlet system. And all the germs and bacteria that will fester in that area of course….yuk!

But, at the end of the proverbial day, we are merely commenting on a little countertop dishwasher and in no short order that countertop area is going to be pretty yucky I wouldn’t mind betting. Perhaps it would be more appropriate to advise you throw it in the skip and buy a new pair of marigolds for Christmas. 😉

Agreed, you wouldn’t drive around with the fuel cap of your motor would you?
