Hi there, great site – and Merry Christmas. Hope you can help me

Our 13 year Bosch WFF 1201 tripped the RCD one afternoon. When I flicked the fuse switch to normal, the machine will fill and drain, but will not turn or spin. This is a proper washing machine with stainless steel tube and cast iron weights.

So took the motor off and replaced the bushes (which were tiny little stubs) thinking that would sort it. Stripped the motor, and flicked the internal motor 15 amp fuse to ensure it was reset. I also cleaned the commutator and it is nice a coppery!

I reassembled it all fully expecting to get another 10 years out of it, and nothing happened. It still drains and fills, but will not turn or spin. So with the power off (again) I traced the six cables (attached to the plug which attaches to the motor) back to the PCB and unplugged them. I then tested each pair of wires (2/3, 4/5 and 6/7 on the motor plug) and found no open circuits. I don’t have a multimeter so used a simple bulb/battery circuit to determine if the circuit was OK.

So I managed to deduce no open circuits from the wires connecting to the PCB and around the motor, and the motor is nice and clean and has new brushes. I have no means of testing the PCB.

Relays are clicking on and off, which I assume are those that send power to the motor, but these appear more frequent than you would expect for normal washing (clicking on an off every 5 seconds or so), but motor just will not turn, and definitely will not spin.

Now, I’m thinking it’s likely the PCB which will make it uneconomical to repair, but I really am a novice so have nothing to further underpin this conclusion. I’m loathe to call a technician without exhausting my options as I’d rather put that money towards a new machine if I need one, but I don’t buy cheap so that will be £800. Meanwhile it’s Christmas and the washing is piling up.

Any thoughts on what may be dcausing the problem and what else I can test? As I said this really is a quality machine, in the days when Bosch made them in Germany and turned out proper quality products

It may have blown a track on the pub, which you may be able to bridge out by soldering wire across it.A visual inspection will show it up

Cheers repman, that was the exact fauult. Bridged it with a bit of wire and everything is hunky dory.

Now all I need is solder iron and some solder to complete the job. Off to B&Q me thinks.

Anyway, I bought a Miele earlier in the day to replace the broken machine. Just canclled the order, and that £800 is staying in my bank account for a little while yet.

    I owe you a beer!

I went through a similar process with my WFF1201 GB recently.

    – Changed carbon brushes
    – Checked heating element for resistance (was 27 Ohms)
    – Eventually, after taking the PCB out of the machine I noticed there was solder missing from one of the wires. The heat must have disintegrated it over time. I added a new lump of solder and now have a working machine again.

    Thanks for the tip! 8)
