ParticipantHi
Can anyone help?
I only bought the fridge freezer a month ago and it isnt cooling properly.
One minute i think it is working and then in a few hours everything in the freezer has defrosted and the fridge isnt cold. I have turned the temperature dial to 7 and put the winter button on – it freezes up etc – but then gets warm again.I have had to throw food out and cannot rely even on food in the fridge being at the correct temperature.
Any ideas?
I am due to have an engineer out from mfi in a few days but i have read such bad reviews about it i am not expecting much. I notcied in the manual that there should be ventilation at the bottom of the f/freezer. Mine is integrated and doesnt seem to have this? Coudl this stop the f/freezer from performing effectively or would it just be the thermostat?
Has anyone else had the same problem?
thanks!

Hi Kennedy
Yes a lack of ventilation can cause problems with fridge freezers, particularly when they are built in, however it would have to be almost airtight behind the appliance to make it cut out in such short order!
More likely there is a fault with the thermostat which the engineer should be able to sort easily for you….thermostats are mass produced items and occasionally a faulty one ‘escapes’ the factory! 😉
Do mention the ventilation to the engineer as well…he should be able to advise if there is sufficient, or if the kitchen fitters need to return (many installation books that come with the appliance give detailed drawings of how the ventilation should be created)Clive

hi clive
thanks for your reply.
the engineer came out today (while the fridge freezer was working!!) and has ordered a thermostat but …
he mentioned that it is more probable that it is due to ambient temperature control – the fact the freezer hasnt got its own thermostat – only the fridge and in cold weather the fridge will think it doesnt need to cool and then the freezer defrosts. i think it is once the temperature in the room drops to < 10C.
this could be right as it has been cold and numerous times it has defrosted overnight when the heating is off.
has anyone had a similar problem.
how can i have a fridge feezer which may defrost at any time if the temp drops!? or even defrosts and then freezes again without me knowing …? the engineer suggested buying a heater for the kitchen to the the temp above 10C in cold conditions..
Surely after i have just bought a new f/freezer i am not expected to do that am i? has anyone raised this issue with mfi and got anywhere? i need a fridge freezer to stay on and keep my food safe to eat!
any thoughts appreciated…
there must be more people that have had this problem and i would be interested to see their outcome with mfi. my kitchen is cool anyway and this would mean it would go into defrost mode more frquently..
thanks!

Hi Kennedy,
First off in my experience proper ventilation is vital with built in appliances in respect of refrigeration and cooking products, if it is not right then you will have problems that will manifest either in the short or longer term. One thing that you can be sure of is that it will cause a problem.
The <10oC issue is due to reductions in manufacturing costs as the system employed here negates the need for a second compressor, thermostat and a host of other bits. The downside is that it has to be run at a what is considered a "reasonable" room temperature which is generally accepted to be 18oC or higher. This should be noted in the fitting instructions and it should also be available on any sepcifications given by the manufacturer for the product as well.
Most modern domestic refrigeration products are entirely unsuitable for colder environments as well as areas where there is damp, or moist air, such as a garage or outhouse.
With the appliance that you have there I would doubt that there is a machine on the market now that would perform any better given the situation that you have it in, or indeed, perform at all.
K.

hello
thanks for your reply.
would i be right in thinking that the majority of fridge freezers will defrost during a cold spell in winter (especially overnight when the heating is off) – overnight minimum temperatures often drop to below 10C in houses during the winter and that most people do not actually realise this as during the day with central heating on etc everything has frozen again?
this is totally new to me – my first house, fridge freezer etc and am learning as i go along…..friends i have spoken too have not to their knowledge had such problems.
thanks

ParticipantKennedy,
Most modern fridge freezers have a separate timer to deal with defrosting. The problem is that the thermostat will be of a “gas capillary” type – this means a long skinny tube full of gas – a goodly length of which will run OUTSIDE the fridge, and will directly affect the operation of the appliance as it will detect the ambient temperature, as opposed to the temperature of the fridge section. This is where a nice warm kitchen will actually improve the efficiency of your fridge freezer!

Hi,
I have kept my Fridge freezer in the garage for the last two years and regularly when it cold outside (anywhere near 2{e5d1b7155a01ef1f3b9c9968eaba33524ee81600d00d4be2b4d93ac2e58cec2d}) the Freezer defrosts.
I have also had responses that say it is due to the thermostat in the Fridge thinking the whole thing is cool enough.
I have come to accept that in the winter I am going to disconnet the Fridge Freezer. I have just bought a standalone Freezer and it works fine
🙂

Hey having similar problems, except when I tap the thermostat control with a bottle it starts. I replaced the thermostat but within 24 hours the same problem has developed.

this model is a whirlpool and they have had problems whith thermostats in the last year. some running cotinuosly and some sticking off. plus a problem with the capillary (phile) location. and as capillary does not run OUTSIDE the fridge on this model it can not detect ambient temp.
