ParticipantWhat I thought was damaged bearings turned out to be a spider arm cracked in three places.
The machine is 6 years old and not sure if it is worth £100+ on a new drum.
(why do Bosch revet this part to the drum!)If I buy a new machine how can I prevent this happening again
What machine would you advise for £300 that has a replaceable spider arm?
Thanks.

Use a good quality, ‘green box’ powder such as Ariel for your whites and heavy wash and do a 60 degree wash at least once a week or do a maintenance wash every six weeks or so.
This damage is mainly caused by doing low temperature washes with liquids.
£300 will not get you a machine of good quality, no matter what make. :rolls:

Because the inner drum and spider are all one unit.

Constant low temperature washes usually with bleach free detergent causes this problem. To help prevent this happening do a monthly ’90degC service wash’ with a bleach based (whites) detergent.

At under £300 you can only by rubbish and most of that rubbish have welded sealed tubs these days anyway. So access to the spider required a can opener or dynamite!
Pay more – buy mid-range Bosch is my advice. 😀

How much do I need to spend to get a machine that is repairable and will last longer far longer than 6 years?
Do you have any particular models?
I bosch definitely the best brand?
ThanksDecember 31, 2012 at 10:09 am #386957Martin

Bosch should be good for up to 10 yrs, Miele and ISE then 15 to 20 may be possible.

The best ‘reasonably priced’ brand yes!

Bosch Exxcel WAQ28461GB
Bosch Exxcel WAQ283S0GBWho knows?……..given the right care and attention and just a few wash loads per week and they may well do. In the wrong hands with the wrong detergents on the wrong cycles, knocking out wash load after wash load, day in day out?…..then most likely not.
What’s with the 10 years limit anyway? Have you heard that the world is going to end in 2023 ????

Yes who knows?? I know of a 14 year old Indesit machine that is on its original bearings- no lie, cheap machine. Next point I don`t like Bosch, they`re expensive to repair, expensive to buy and German (!) though many are made in Spain, Russia, and elsewhere. If you were talking about a Bosch made in the 1980`s where they were very expensive but very very good quality then I`d agree but a 2012 Bosch I have little faith in especially the cheaper £350 ones. Point to note not all the cheap machines are rubbish even dare I say Bush/ Haier- shock horror- some of these you can dismantle to remove the drum and replace the bearings and the spider without having to buy the drum complete- so long as you can get the parts. It is complex this sealed tank business- the Aqualtis Hotpoint contraption that some retail at £600 have a sealed tank unit-not good for the money ( horrible unreliable piece of tosh) so based on that you cannot base too much on price either.
