Over the last week or so, I think that the out of balance protection has started to act up. I haven’t been washing any especially large/small loads, but it starts to spin, then slows down/speeds up a number of times. Today I turned it on as I went out and came home to a sopping wet load of clothes 🙁
If I run it with the top panel removed, I can see the drum is jumping around a lot and that seems to be stopping the spin. Is it possible that the two hefty springs, from which the drum is suspended, are overstretched and need replacing ?
Any advice greatly appreciated.

When the insulation breaks down inside the motor this fault occurs. The motor most likely needs removing, cleaning and the carbon brushes replaced. If the insulation reading is high it just won’t ramp up into full spin but simply try several times and then stop.

Thanks for that speedy reply, Martin. Replacing the brushes shouldn’t be beyond me but if some insulation has been damaged can I just sort that with some insulating tape in the appropriate place ?
Any further help much appreciated.

The term “insulation” refers to the motor’s earth insulation protection potential. In other words its resistance toward the electrical current sorting to earth from the commutator and coil. Carbon ‘dust’ is the main offender and hence the need for the motor to be stripped and cleaned. Once reassembled, its insulation qualities tested with an ‘insulation meter’. Any earth leakage at all will still allow the motor to appear to work as normal but the electronics that control the motor can be interrupted when it senses an insulation breakdown. The result is that it fails to ramp up to full spin.
In severe cases the electronics within the control module can be damaged beyond repair due to entirely to the motor’s failings.

Martin, thanks very much for that explanation. I’ve taken the motor off and given it a clean, but I think I may have found the real culprit when I was removing the motor. The multi-wire electrical connector that needs to be disconnected when you get the motor out has six wires attached; one of them was hanging on by a thread and then fell off once I’d removed the connector. I reattached it and stuck it all back together and it seems fine now – spinning away happily.
