Hi, I’m fairly newly self-employed (although I have been an engineer for 15 years). Just wondered if anyone had any advice as to how I go about getting more work? How many service calls per day is it possible to get do you think, where is best to advertise, are letting agents a good source of work? any advice from you experienced independents out there would be gratefully received!

    😆

There’s loads of competition in your area, dozens in fact so you have to get your act together and advertise, advertise, advertise….. A good comprehensive web site an absolute must for starters. Letting agents will likely screw you for all you are worth but nevertheless beggars can’t be choosers if you’re lacking work and you need to let them know you might be interested all the same. Don’t work on the cheap!

The only thing about letting agents, you have to remember if you get a couple on board somebody else was doing the work before you so beware, they can dump you just as quickly, i had a letting agent i did a lot of work for then suddenly it all dried up, found out later it was another engineer who went self employed at the same time who was doing the work, thing is we had an unwritten agreement we wouldnt stray into each others areas when i got calls from that agent in his area i gave the calls to him. That taught me a lesson there is no friends in business.

Letting Agents good source of work as a top up, you’ll more likely wait to get paid a month or two, There always seems to be someone else who will work for less, always an enticement for the letting agent who thinks he can save money, Agree with the advertising and as much as you can afford, I will PM you something that might interest you as soon as I get the time. Always give a good service and get things fixed asap, sounds obvious that one but when we had someone who approached a couple of our letting agents and who said he could do it all much cheaper, it transpired he started making all manner of mistakes, Tenant’s kept waiting, a couple of cock ups like a torn floor and damaged worktop.

Anyway after the letting agents got the measure of that they came back and we started working for them again, it happens and could happen again. Never put all your eggs in one basket either, diversity is the name of the game !
