ParticipantMy first post so be gentle 🙂
Ive just found a few inches of cold/clean water in the drum of the washing machine, that been standing switched off for 3 days. Im am going through the process of finding out if its the hot or cold fill solenoid thats passing water at the moment, switching each one off, one at a time, waiting and then checking the drum.
My question: If it proves to be the Hot feed, is it just ok to leave this feed switched off and fill through the cold only. ( I know it will cost more in electric to heat the water) or does the machine have to detect both feeds in use.January 26, 2013 at 4:50 pm #388741iadom

One of the fill valves is faulty, your method is the best way to find out which valve is faulty. The machine will not work correctly without a hot valve as the hot water supply is used to flush the detergent into the drum. The single hot valve is not expensive so should be changed if needed. The cold valve is a treble valve again not a massive expense.
This is quite an old machine so it has basic (reliable) electronics. The only things on this machine that are ‘sensed’ electronically are the motor speeds and the water temperature. 😉
You could leave it to fill from cold but it will not work on the three highest heat settings, the one 95 degree wash and the two 60 degree washes. You would also have to place the detergent in the drum with the clothes.

Thanks for the advice concise, helpful and exactly what I needed.
A nice start to my first forum entry.
Believe it or not there was no water in the drum overnight, so checking daily (and leaving the door securely closed).
May have been a bit of gunk in the valve. Heres hoping.
Thank youJanuary 28, 2013 at 8:23 pm #388743repman

Out of interest do you have low hot water pressure? as this tends to cause the valve to pass although you will need to change it , you can then use a “Y” piece and couple the hot inlet to the higher pressure cold water.

Having said that, if it has worked for at least 15 years, possibly more in it’s current position then I would leave it on hot & cold to start with if you do have to change the hot valve.
